Congressman: 110 mph high-speed rail really isn't that fast
Daily Herald ^ | 04/21/10 | Marni Pyke

Critics rained turkeys and dogs on the Midwest high speed rail parade at a congressional hearing Tuesday.

The region received about $2.6 billion out of $8 billion in economic stimulus funding to create fast train corridors, including a Chicago to St. Louis route that would travel at speeds of up to 110 mph.

U.S. Rep. John Mica of Florida mocked the Chicago plan, saying true high-speed rail in Europe and Asia is 220 mph.

110mph is called a “local” train in most parts of the developed world.

I don't know where you're from, but if the drivers I share the road with in the morning were allowed to drive 100mph I would most definitely be taking the train, no matter what the inconvenience.

Shoot, I can do 110mph in my car! No sweat.

Ike should have built an American Autobaun.

I remember back in the day before the 55mph laws that in certain parts of the country you could do 75-85 MPH. It sure made for a quick trip to Texas or Az driving through the deserts going that fast. If they build it make it go 300mph minimum. Hell I'd even drive there to ride a train going that fast just for gins and giggles.

actually I am thinking that with GPS autodrive is a reality right now.

We can have a 747 fly (takeoff and land too) by itself but we can’t do it with a buick?

What happens to mass transit when I can have my car do my driving for me?

that is one,

the majority will eventually transition to autodrive.

you can even retrofit cars with “stuff” these days. (if collectable restoration is not an issue)
