Pregnant 9-year-old Rape Victim Being Used To Push Abortion Legalization

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, February 18, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The president of the Hispanic Division of Human Life International has warned that an exceptional abortion case in Nicaragua is being exploited by feminist organizations to press for abortion legalization.

Nicaraguan public opinion is facing a controversy over a 9 year old girl diagnosed pregnant and with two sexually transmitted diseases. Supposedly the girl was raped by a 20 year old male, although her stepfather is also suspected because he refused DNA tests.

Nicaraguan feminist groups requested a "therapeutic" abortion, which the hospital doctors refused. They offered the girl medical and social support instead. The Ministry for the Family in Costa Rica also opposed to killing the unborn child.

Feminist groups were eventually able to have the girl sent back home [to Nicaragua], where they are demanding an abortion for her. Her parents are also requesting it, even though the girl is already 15 weeks pregnant. Nicaragua's special prosecutor for crimes against children has asked the government to appoint a special committee of experts to determine whether an abortion can be carried out, on the basis that the mother's life is at risk. However, doctors (including OBGYN's) , have declared that it is possible to save both the girl and the baby.

If doctors advise that the pregnancy can continue, there are offers from organizations in the U.S. and Cuba, to transport the girl to another location for an abortion, according to Violeta Delgado, executive secretary of the "Red de Mujeres Contra la Violencia" (Women's Network Against Violence). MS Delgado claims that this is a case for "therapeutic abortion". She has threatened to sue the Nicaraguan government. and take this case before the Interamerican Human Rights Court, if the right to abortion is denied. Dr. Rafael Cabrera Artola, a gynecologist and dean at the Faculty of Medicine at American University in Managua, declared that there have been cases of 10 year old girls who have been able to deliver their babies. He and other experts maintain that abortion is more traumatic than birth, especially taking into account the fact that the girl is almost four months pregnant.

Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, the Archbishop of Managua, the capital, has asked that every effort be made to save both the girl and her baby. A decision on this case will be made shortly by the Nicaraguan government.

A Spanish pro-life website (http://hazteoir.bigstep.com/generic187.html ) has posted a Spanish language form letter and the e-mail addresses of Nicaraguan government officials to whom supporters of the lives of both the young mother and her unborn child can write and express their opposition to any abortion:

Would they consider passing a law that allows 9-year old rape victims to have abortions -- but bans all other people from killing their child? No?

Then any discussion of a 9-year old rape victim is not relevant to the topic of abortion. The law that they support will be applied to 25-year old women who think a kid would be a drag on their career. It treats murder as a frivolous act, and it's wrong.

Have these same people come out with anti-rape campaigns and harsher penalties for rapists?

Even in this case, they can simply induce very early and try to make the baby comfortable until he/she passes away.

Of course, they would much rather push for the killing. Bloodshed is much more enjoyable for leftists.

The “penalty” is exile to America.

They could pass a law were abortion was permissible if the mother’s life was in danger, and I’m struggling to imagine how a 9 year old can be pregnant and the pregnancy NOT endanger her life.
Unfortunately, that would probably just be the foot in the door to evolve beyond that onto abortion on demand....

What is going to happen to the worthless parents? I suspect they will get a free pass while the baby and the child will suffer a painful procedure.

Damn the world and all those who have failed to protect the weak and helpless.

Leftists could care less about this little girl. They just want that baby dead for the sake of planetary population control.

As far as I’m concerned, every leftist is as guilty as a rapist and should be executed on sight.

There's a good article and discussion here on how abortion in fact hurts, does not "help," rape and incest victims (Link).

I know a woman, a MD now almost 60, who performed abortions on underage girls at the Bronx Pediatric Hospital in NY in the 1970's. At the time, she thought it was compassionate and necessary, since virtually all of them were victims of incest or rape (statutory or forcible.)

But her experience compelled her to conclude that she was wrong. The abortions became an additonal source of trauma to the girls: the actual outcomes in terms of bad emotional/psychological consequences (measurable by such indicators as subsequent depression, suicide or suicide-ideation, alcohol and drug abuse, etc.) were worse for girls who were given abortions, than for girls who gave birth to their babies.

Bottom line: especially if the girl or woman has the allies she needs to provide her security and ongoing support, childbirth can be a healing experience, a nurturing experience, a self-respect-building experience. There is nothing in this world that builds self-respect except doing the right thing.

By way of contrast, abortion just leaves a girl empty, in pain, re-violated, and complicit in an act of violence.
