Gates Says U.S. Lacks Strategy to Curb Irans Nuclear Drive By DAVID E. SANGER and THOM SHANKER
WASHINGTON Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has warned in a secret three-page memorandum to top White House officials that the United States does not have an effective long-range policy for dealing with Irans steady progress toward nuclear capability, according to government officials familiar with the document.
Several officials said the highly classified analysis, written in January to President Obamas national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones, touched off an intense effort inside the Pentagon, the White House and the intelligence agencies to develop new options for Mr. Obama. They include a revised set of military alternatives, still under development, to be considered should diplomacy and sanctions fail to force Iran to change course.
Officials familiar with the memos contents would describe only portions dealing with strategy and policy, and not sections that apparently dealt with secret operations against Iran, or how to deal with Persian Gulf allies.
One senior official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the memo, described the document as a wake-up call. But White House officials dispute that view, insisting that for 15 months they had been conducting detailed planning for many possible outcomes regarding Irans nuclear program.
In an interview on Friday, General Jones declined to speak about the memorandum. But he said: On Iran, we are doing what we said we were going to do. The fact that we dont announce publicly our entire strategy for the world to see doesnt mean we dont have a strategy that anticipates the full range of contingencies we do.

And yet, Obama has a clear cut strategy regarding Israeli settlements.
Does this mean that Israeli settlements are more of a strategic threat to humanity than Iranian nuclear bombs?
Seriously, this a$$ may have sold grass but he sure as hell never cut grass.
I doubt whether he has ever earned a single dollar through honest work.
There... thats better.

Something about the New York Times, and the words “Secret Document”, or “Secret memorandum” that just don’t go well together.
Seems the NYT thinks those words mean it is something they absolutely have to publish, or suffer some sort of penalty if they don’t.
Odumbos strategy is to have a nuclear Iran
Took the words right off my keyboard.
Gates has turned into/remains a conflicted REMF who has the ideology of a turd.
Right on both accounts. The Goldwater-Nichols act requires the CIC to present a National Security Strategy to the congress 180 days after being inaugurated.
That was July/August 2009.
National Security is not a priority for Obama.
Check keyword search ‘nationalsecurityfail’, ‘NSS’, and ‘NSP’ for further articles dealing with the current CIC and the National Security Strategy of the US.
I'm suggesting Gates and the Pentagon indeed have military strategies that are being ignored by the White House.
Thou speakest much truth.
That makes more sense than the way you put it before.
Good! :-)
“national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones”
So, this General watches Hulu all day then? He hasn’t presented and achieved agreement on policy? How are MOUs, Directives, COOP and Instructions handed down to the field exactly without policy justification?
The list, ping
The United States does not currently have an effective policy for dealing with ANYTHING. Iran is just one small example.
Oh they have them alright....they use them against us.
The problem with any theories about this, including yours, is that we don’t know the facts for certain.
First, the story comes from the Slimes. As someone posted above, this is an intentional leak from Obama.
So, it could be a ham-fisted attempt at disinformation by the Boy King.
Second, if Gates has developed strategies for these scenarios, and I believe he has, why didn’t he mention them at the meeting? It’s a nonsensical account of things, IMO.
