Tiger Woods' Nike Spot Fails to Make Cut: Controversial 'comeback' ad fails on all fronts
AdWeek ^ | April 15, 2010 | Steve McClellan

Viewers' general reaction to the "Did You Learn Anything?" spot from Nike featuring Tiger Woods? In a word: "ick."

According to ad evaluator Ace Metrix, the commercial scored well below norms for footwear ads overall, garnering low marks for both persuasion and watchability.

Ace gauged the clip using an online panel of 500 adults. The 30-second commercial, which featured a voiceover from Tiger's dead dad, received an overall score of 365 out of a possible 950 points. (The norm for spots in the apparel footwear category is 501). For persuasion, the ad scored 428 (vs. a 554 norm for the category), and for watchability it scored 459 (vs. a 567 norm).

Ace said the spot, crafted by independent Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., was the lowest-scoring commercial in the category since a Nike/Serena Williams commercial that ran last September, around the time Williams verbally berated a line judge after a disputed call at the U.S. Open. That ad scored 353 overall.

It's as creepy as when Kenny G did a posthumous duet with Satchmo, and just as disgusting.

I would never use the advertising firm that thought this was a good idea. They’re just plain stupid, and you can’t fix stupid.

The ad didn’t work for several reasons.

1- There was no sincerity in press conference a few weeks ago.

2- Digging up old sound from his “beloved” Father shows a sincere lack of respect and desperation.

3- The lack of respect he showed his family over and over creeps out the family oriented golfing community.

4- His arrogance reminds folks of Obama. The ad poked fun at what is a very serious incident and we’re sick of fakes.

It was dreadful - yet another example of USING people to further his own self-interest.

He USED his dead father FGS!

Not unlike using all those pathetic women to satisfy his sexual appetite. Using his wife and children to portray a fictional *good family guy*.

Whose idea was that ad? Woods had to approve it - I suspect it was his creation.
