Former Governor Makes Announcement During Tea Party Rally POSTED: 9:00 am CDT April 14, 2010 UPDATED: 3:34 pm CDT April 15, 2010 Email Print Comments (12)MADISON, Wis. --

Images: Images: Tommy Thompson At Tea Party Rally Former Gov. Tommy Thompson told 12 News reporter Kent Wainscott he will not run for U.S. Senate against Russ Feingold.

He said that he wanted to but decided at the last minute not to run, calling it a "family decision."

Thompson made his formal announcement during a tea party rally at the state Capitol Thursday afternoon.

Thompson's appearance cast a large shadow on the event Thursday and even led some in the movement not to come.

The leader of the Milwaukee-based tea party group GrandSons of Liberty Tim Dake says he knows of at least six groups that chose not to attend because they felt Thompson's appearance made it appear like he was receiving an official endorsement by the movement.

Thompson received a warm welcome, with some in the crowd chanting, "Run Tommy Run!"

Thompson told the crowd he loved them and what they stood for.

Now, maybe we can get down to business and elect a new Senator.

Well, too bad. Tommy has his faults but he would have been an interesting and entertaining candidate.

I wish Mark Neumann would get the hell out of the Gov primary and give Feingold another run for him money...

Well, Tommy, if you won’t help where you could have the most impact at this critical point in our nation’s history, maybe you should just disappear from the political scene. Your occasional ‘expert’ commentary on TV isn’t worth all that much.

Can any other Republican in Wisconsin seriously challenge Feingold?

Did I not predict this? Do I know Tommy, or what? What do I win in cash and prizes? Another DECADE of Feingold’s commie hand in my pocket? ;)

We all lose on this one. Kinda stupid bringing his ‘kids’ into this. What are they, now? In their 40’s? Yeesh.

“Can any other Republican in Wisconsin seriously challenge Feingold?”

I’m voting for T. Wall, but unless more than a few people have been paying attention to Feingold’s state-wide “I’m Not Listening” sessions, it’ll be a no-go. :(

Maybe he’s not running because he wants to run for president—like Pataki in New York.

“...why do you suppose he didn’t run?”

Because he’s a Big Fish in a Little Pond and he likes it that way. He’s all talk and no action, just like Paperdoll said.

He puts Tommy first above all things, including God & Country.

He was leading Feingold rather handily in polls. Somewhat surprising he didnt run in what should be a good year for GOP.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on him running for the Presidency again. I just don’t see it panning out.

But, with Tommy you never say never. ;)

Hasn’t he already served his country? Why don’t you make a political run?

I sat with Tommy in a private box soon after 911 at Soldier Field when the Packers were in town. He gave me an FDNY cap. He is a good man - not becaues of the the cap, but because he is.
