The pilot of the plane that crashed killing Polands president, Lech Kaczynkski along with Polands First Lady and other top government officials refused to take instructions from air traffic controllers, according to Rianovosti:
The head of the traffic control group warned of poor weather conditions, but the crew went ahead with the landing without permission. And [they] also made their landing approach without permission.
The [control tower] head said three times to execute a flyby procedure. When the crew did not listen, the control tower could only continue to guide the plane and watch it. It was the only landing approach, the plane crashed at once, he added.
The planes crew reportedly failed to follow standard procedure of informing the tower of the planes status and maneuvers.
Weather conditions, probably a crew mistake, loss of altitude and the pilots ambition to land the plane by all means. I think this ambition was due to the fact that there were such high-ranking people onboard Because of this false idea that diverting to another airport is a shame the pilot took so many people to Heaven with him, Muravyov said.
Retired Col. Anatoly Murayyov, the air traffic controller who was guiding the plane concludes that the fatal crash was caused by a combination of factors.
didnt they try to land 5 time and the tower wouldnt let them?
I don’t believe this story.
Having spent four years tooth and jowl with pilots and a lifetime of reading air accident reports - this story is absurd.
There’s always the possibility that he was told by the President to try to land anyway.
I did hear that the Poland President had a habit of yelling at and controlling air crews and had demanded previous landings in difficult situations.
Guess we need to wait and see.
If the russians say so then it must be true
Maybe the ATC was doing CFIT for the PIC?
“Having spent four years tooth and jowl with pilots and a lifetime of reading air accident reports - this story is absurd.”
Then you should also know that pilot arrogance/overconfidence can be a major contributing factor in many accidents.
And it’s looking more and more like that is what happened here.
VIP passengers in the back, and natural suspicions that the Russians don’t want them there, combined with an arrogant “I can do it” pilot attitude.
Unless, he was given a direct order to land the plane by the president (or some other ranking official working on the president's behalf). Which, frankly, I don't see either.
This just doesn't pass the sniff test.
He tried to court martial one pilot who refused to land under dangerous conditions and diverted to another airport instead.
I like to think Im not prone to conspiracies, but things just dont seem to fit together all pretty like on this one... the Polish government, strongly anti-Russian as I recall, is decapitated by a freak accident on Russian soil, meaning the Russians control the evidence and the investigation (Putin himself said hes going to lead up the investigation to lay our worried hearts at ease...) we have the spin machine shifting into third gear, what with the stories about concerning Kaczynski ordering a landing once prior that the captain refused, plus supposed eye witnesses explained what they saw on a particularly fog-filled night that just so happens to parrot exactly what the official Russian government line is... and Im left here thinking, what do the Russians have to lose? Who would punish them if they did do away with these men? Poland cant, its not strong enough... Western Europe wont, they are beholden to Russia for energy... you could lay damning evidence in front of Obama and he wouldnt lift a finger for our ally... and the UN, forget it. So whats the detriment to flexing your muscle, aligning neighboring countries to your benefit? They have everything to gain, and absolutely nothing to lose.
We got newspapermen on the payroll, right? They might like a story like that.
ATC records/transcripts? No “black box” on the plane?
Pure rot. The authority to try an instrument approach lies solely with the pilot in command. Whoever wrote this is completely ignorant of aviation.
Black boxes already recovered. Putin is heading up the investigation, not the FAA, you know. The plane just happened to crash in Russia.
Don’t expect any truth to be forthcoming.
It’s quite likely that someone in the cabin looked down and could see the ground. Thinking , Well, since I can see the ground, we’ll tell the pilot to land.”
What this person didn’t think of was that the pilot couldn’t see more than the same 2000 feet, which is not enough forward vision to land a medium jet that is flying at 150 mph.
