'Openly Anti-Semitic' Party Gains Power in Hungary

The center-right and far-right won by a wide margin in Hungary's elections Sunday, initial results showed. The right-wing Fidesz party took 52.77 percent of the vote, and the far-right Jobbik party took 16.71. The incumbent Socialist party took only 19.29 percent.

Runoffs will be held later in the month in districts where no candidate received a majority of the votes.

The results were a cause for concern for European Jewish groups, which have accused Jobbik of anti-Semitism and racial hatred. One Hungarian Jewish group labeled Sunday's election the first time “a movement pursuing openly anti-Semitic policies” has gained power in Hungary since the Nazi era.

Is the anti-Semitism charge against the Jobbik Party accurate or just a leftist lie?

Don’t know. They may merely be xenophobic, but I have no idea.

From what I understand, Jobbik does not have an explicitly anti-semitic program, but many of its key members have been videotaped makeing anti-semitic responses, and some of its candidates have been know to write anti-semitic diatribes.

They are mostly a "cultural traditionalist" ruralist party, socially conservative, but strong for protectionism (and subsidies) for farmers.

European Jewish groups, which have accused Jobbik of anti-Semitism and racial hatred

I guess I need more information. Some Jewish groups here (in the US) have accused Rush of being anti-Semitic which has to be one of the most outlandish and ignorant smears of all time.

I read an earlier article about Hungary, many of the people quoted were Jewish, however they admitted that they themselves were in favor of the other party.

I think actions will be speaking louder than words in this case; just like the ADL and SPLC paints "bitter clingers" as anti-Semitic when they are not. Give it 6 months and you will know for sure either way.

In the U.S., it’s the party of the left that’s anti-Semitic.

Jobbik is NOT “openly anti-semitic.”

It remains a minor party.

European Jews are baffling. They by and large align with socialist, even though it was a national SOCIALIST party that exterminated millions of Jews, and then are shocked when anti-socialist parties show anti-Jew attitudes.

It’s beyond baffling...

The first thing we need to do is stop looking at the european left and right through an American lens. They don’t mean the same things and can mean very different things from one European country to the next.

Pim Fortuyn was considered a right wing extremist despite being openly gay. He himself considered himself to be more in line with Silvio Berlusconi.

Same in Europe. Remember the National Socialists (NAZIs)?

One of the greatest propaganda coups EVER by the left was to pin Nazism (and the KKK etc) on conservatives and the right. That said, there seeme to be something in the mindset of being a secular Jew that wants to believe that propaganda.

Religious Jews seem to see more clearly. Huh, maybe it’s that God thing?

Add that to celebrating former members of the Arrow Cross, many of whom were war criminals, and their Palestinianism and it seems obvious. The irony is that Magyars, or rather On-Ugurs (9 Tribes) invaded an area with a pre-existing Jewish population and among the 9 Tribes led by the Magyars was one, Kavars, which may have included Jews. Hungarians have a long history of stupid nationalism (as opposed to rational nationalism). During the Mongol Invasion, King Bela allowed for town violence against the Cumans and then expelled them. As light cavalry with past experience (defeat actually) against the Mongols, they would have been useful. Instead, Bela entreched in a "defensible position" with his flanks exposed. The subsequent battle of Mohi/Mohacs was a disaster for Hungary ahd Europe, the full invasion of which was averted only by the death of the Mongol Khan a few months later.
And don't get me started on Hungarian nationalists in the 19th century.
