Unemployment extension legislation: Senate votes to move forward on 30-day extension

Just a quick update to let you know that the Senate voted to move forward on the 30-day unemployment extension eligibility legislation:

The Huffington Post's Arthur Delaney sent me the latest information on the Senate vote. Republican Senator Olympia Snowe seems to be talking out both sides of her mouth, but hopefully she is saying that she will not stand in the way of passing the 30-day extension.

Four Republicans -- Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) -- broke with their party and supported a procedural vote to advance the bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he reached an agreement with Republicans to proceed to the actual bill on Tuesday afternoon, with a final vote possible on Thursday.

Snowe said that even if the parties don't reach a deal on a funding offset this week, she'll vote in favor of the measure. "If it's not gonna happen, it's not gonna happen in terms of financing it," she said. "Let's try. If we can't, we can't. Yes, I'm in the category of 'you've got to put that money out there for the people who need it and desperately deserve it.'"

Here's another look at the legislative process:

Four Republicans help advance benefits extension

Four Republican senators on Monday voted to move forward on a short-term extension of unemployment benefits and certain healthcare benefits that had been tied up in the Senate.

Sens. George Voinovich (Ohio), Scott Brown (Mass.), Olympia Snowe (Maine) and Susan Collins (Maine) voted with the Democrats to invoke cloture on a motion to proceed with debate on the measure.

All four of their votes were needed; the measure passed 60-34, with six senators not voting.

They understand. But that is not the game plan you see. The plan is to make us all dependent on the government.

Yeah, you’re right. So when we’re all broke, who are they going to tax?

I do wonder what the millions of unemployed are going to do
when that last check runs out and there’s no money left for
groceries or gas.

To an extent, you are correct, but I worked for 30 years and paid my unemployment insurance before my job ended. Then I got 23 weeks and 2 extensions, then they said I did not qualify any more. I dont know where these 99 weeks bits are coming from, but it sure as hell isnt in my state.

All this pissing and moaning about folks getting unemployment, ya didnt piss and moan when the government was taking in our insurance premiums and not paying anything out,,,eh? eh? But now that we have 15 million people out of jobs, its fair to complain because they are collecting their insurance? I paid for what paltry little amount I got, over and over several times. But now I am not elgible even tho there are no jobs in this area unless you are a registered democrat and a hispanic or female. Old white guys need not apply for this either.

“...Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) — broke with their party and supported ...”

Why do I think this will be a standing headline for the remainder of this year and beyond????

I’m in the same (age)boat and tend to agree with you. Critics of Unemployment could just as well be critical of Social Security. Ya’ll paid into it - so it is fully legit to use it when it’s available to you.

This is not at all like getting federal handouts from the general government coffers which depends on whose rep is the biggest crook.
