The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, told an exuberant crowd at an immigration rally Saturday in Las Vegas that Congress would start work on immigration overhaul as soon as lawmakers return this week.
Were going to have comprehensive immigration reform now, he said in a speech to more than 6,000 people, mostly immigrants.
We need to do this this year, Reid said, drawing cheers from the crowd.
Reid told the crowd he believes he has 56 Senate votes in support of the legislation.
He outlined legislation that would include border security measures and a temporary guest worker program. To gain legal status, illegal immigrants would face a penalty and a fine, people will have to work, stay out of trouble, pay taxes, learn English, he said.
Opponents of such legislation said they thought chances for passage of an overhaul remained slim while the country is facing high unemployment.
It just doesnt look very feasible as the next big thing, said Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, an organization that favors reduced immigration. I dont think even Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are radical enough to go back to their districts and say American workers dont have priority when it comes to American jobs.
In Chicago, at a rally that drew more than 1,000 people, Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, the No. 2 leader in the Senate, echoed Mr. Reids promise to try to enact the overhaul this year.
Senators Lindsey Graham and Charles Schumer have been working on an immigration bill. Graham said recently that he did not believe there was sufficient support among Republicans to move forward.
More than one thousand people also turned out for a rally in Seattle, and there were smaller events in El Paso, New York City, Philadelphia, and Providence, R.I.

More likely he has 56 votes for his re-election.
By the time the border is of concern, the purpose of closing it may be to keep us in.
Just like National Health Care, Immigration Amnesty will pass.
The Democrats will immediately register 10 million new voters and will register 1 million new voters every year afterward.
The 2010 election will produce modest gains for the GOP.
The long term political destruction of American Conservatism is now an indisputable reality.
No. I disagree. www.numbersusa.com.
The public will be against this even more. Keep fighting.
We knew this was coming. I’m hoping Congress is waking up to the anger of the people and it will fail (not holding my breath, though). It’s the only way they have half a chance in November after they have angered so many Americans. They need to make new ones.
The more I think about all this crap, the more I am inclined to lock the gate to my farm, hunker down and just take care of myself and my wife. To hell with the rest of the world.
McCuckoo will lose the primary if he supports shamnesty.
Tell you what Dingy Harry, build the wall first, staff it adequately, prove that illegals are no longer getting in, then we can discuss the rest.
Hey Harry, go join their government, I’m sure they will find you an appointment...you @sswipe.
Lamesey and McCuckoo are quite a pair.
Coming to soon to YOUR neighborhood:
Poor, underprivilaged..just looking to make a living.
GAG
Of course we are, democrats want to officially spit on every American worker - jobless and fearful of becoming jobless - and voters - "in our faces" as was instructed of them by their leader in a previous "pep rally."
Impressing those illegal aliens, now that's an accomplishment democrats must surely be proud of. Waiting to see the headlines insulting Amercan workers and legal citizens in the MSM so-called news.
I've been passionately fighting the immigration issue for 20 years.
This is the end game.
Does NumbersUSA have these numbers......
75% of new citizens vote Democratic.
If the racial and cultural demography of the USA in 2008 had been identical to the demography in 1984, John McCain would be President.
Politically, Immigration Amnesty is the end game for Conservatives.
Worse. More will come because of demand, while those newly legalized will be out of work and collecting welfare.
It comes down to why the current crop of illegals exist: employers can pay them less than legal workers. When employers have to pay them more — pay SS/M taxes on them, higher wages, etc. — they won’t employ them anymore. They’ll want the new illegals that will still cost them less. That will put the old crop of illegals on the public dole.
There is no way to prevent immigrants from increasing welfare costs and crime under the current system of payroll taxes, progressive income taxes, and employer-provided benefits. Replace payroll taxes with a 10% sales tax, progressive income taxes with a 10% rate and no deductions, credits, or exemptions, and add a 20% tax on all money transfers out of the country ... then we can talk about immigration.
Ping!
