For Mexicans seeking refuge in the United States from crime-related violence in Mexico and for many Mexicans already in the United States, there is a new hurdle. The State Department quietly changed its policy recently on many of its visas for Mexicans mostly those who own, or want to own, businesses and houses here and who do not intend to immigrate. It reduced the amount of time those visas are valid from the three to five years that had been common to just one year.
San Antonio immigration lawyer Nancy Shivers, of the Shivers & Shivers law firm, said the policy change, which caught immigration lawyers by surprise, applies to applications filed on or after Feb. 22.
I found out about this when a client applied in March for a renewal of his E-2 visa that had been issued previously for five years. The client's investment (in a U.S. business) has increased significantly, and I anticipated he would be issued a five-year E-2 visa. The client was told by the U.S. consul that the visa was being issued for only one year and that it was a new policy, Shivers said.
He couldn't believe it. He said he wanted to apply for an immigrant visa, Shivers recalled. She added that other immigration lawyers have called her, thinking the one-year visas their clients received were a mistake.
The change in policy applies both to Mexicans seeking to come to the United States and to Mexicans already in the United States and seeking visa renewals.
Lawyers say the new policy increases hassles, as Mexicans already in the U.S. will have to visit a U.S. consulate in Mexico each year to renew their visas. It also increases the risk of denials and adds uncertainty for Mexicans about how long they can stay...

We should just annex Mexico and be done with it.
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Are E-2s also available for unemployment compensation with other social (welfare, food stamps, EITC, etc. ) benefits for the family?
Just asking.
Funny you should say that- a Mexican woman said the same thing to me just the other day. She is convinced that the only possible solution to the problems in Mexico is for us to take it over as a new state.
Hey, just have ‘em come to Tulsa. Tulsa PD is too fat and lazy to enforce the already tough immigration laws we’ve got on the books.
That would be the end of america even faster than obama is ending it already.
Only reason that would not work is because we don’t have the will to do it right. If we conquered Mexico and took the natural resources and forced the people to learn English and become U.S. citizens in every sense of the word it would be great. Mexico has a wealth of natural resources that they have never begun to tap. We don’t do things that way any more so it would be a disaster. What we are doing now dealing with Mexico is also a disaster though. The issues with Mexico have given me a greater understanding of why years ago countries flat out conquered other countries and took them over lock, stock, and barrel.
At least they would pay taxes, it would put an end to the illegal alien problem, and maybe stop some of the border killings.
Ping!
Why are you so sure they would pay taxes? They broke the law when they came here to begin with and if we reward them for breaking immigration laws, why would they comply with tax laws?
I don’t think amnesty would put an end to illegal aliens- that was not the result of the last amnesty. In fact we have a worse illegal alien problem now than we did when the first amnesty was passed. Those that are illegal now and receive amnesty will no longer be willing to work for low wages and unsafe or other bad working conditions. A new wave of illegals will be “needed” to fill those jobs and since our borders are not secure I am sure we will get a new wave of illegals.
Border killings are more tied to drug trafficing than to the illegal alien problem- though in some ways they are connected. Are we going to legalize drugs while we are at it? We would have to legalize all drugs because all drugs are smuggled across the border, not just weed. I believe if we give amnesty to illegals we will import the drug cartel war into the U.S. almost overnight so we will have more murders, not less. Illegals are masters at forged and stolen documents and identities so we would give amnesty to many criminals unknowingly.
Why don’t we just do away with all of our laws so no one would be in violation, why play favorites with those that violate immigration laws?
Obama must have some sneaky reason for doing this.
Easy,we’ve got high unemployment numbers so he wants to start getting rid of the surplus labor.
Not a bad idea,it is just that is not quite what he told Hispanics.
I think an E-2 VISA is for foreign businessmen who are doing business in the U.S. The idea is they can stay here to keep an eye on their business. If foreign business people are not allowed to stay here many of them will likely close whatever business they have which would likely put more people out of work.
Illegals are the surpus labor that we need to get rid of, but Obama wants to give them amnesty- not get rid of them.
If times get tough he’ll stand with Muslims over non-Muslims—and blacks worried about low-skilled labor competiton over Hispanics and Democrats who think they need illegal immigrants votes.
I think you misread my post. I didn’t say grant amnesty. I said we should just go ahead and annex Mexico - meaning take the WHOLE country and make it a part of the United States.
I;m sorry, I was posting while painting last night- which doesn’t seem to work any better than posting while drinking.
Annex Mexico- yes if we did it right I would be for it.
It’s okay, I understand.
