Does anyone know how many people actually work for the federal government?
First!!!!
I know - NONE!!!
Many are employed, but none actually work!
LOL!!!
All of us, judging how much they take from us each pay check.
When Obama gets through, all of us.
Soon, it might be easier to find out how may people DON’T work for the government anymore.
All of us.
jokes notwithstanding, somewhere between two and three million civilians, double that with military. No idea with contractors worked into the mix.
Actually, only about half of us...
With 1.9 million civilian workers (including DOD civilians) and 1.4 million uniformed personnel, the federal
government is the largest single employer in the United States (Source: White House 2008 budget numbers and OSD).

Too effing many.
Here’s a reply from Yahoo Answers:
Excluding the CIA, NSA, DIA, and other “sensitive” areas, for which the government does not provide stats, there are about 2 Million civilians directly employed by the Federal Government. (not including post office and civilians working abroad)
Add to that, 35,000 that work for the government, but outside the USA (mostly foreign nationals).
Add the post office, which employs about 656,000 civilians.
Also — bear in mind that this is ONLY civilians. The stats dont say what defines a ‘civilian,’ other than it excludes military personnel. Some would define law enforcement, congressmen, and the judiciary as non-civilian.
US Military currently has:
1,473,900 Active duty personnel
1,458,500 Reservist personnel (excluding IRR)
That adds up to
5,623,400 civilian and military employees of the federal government.
There are other factors — like those indirectly in the employ of the federal government, and those omissions previously mentioned.
If I had to guess — i’d say the actual number was closer to 6 -6.5 million.
A better question might be: When did the US government become the nation’s largest employer? Must have been 150 years ago.
I wonder if U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management employees are included in those numers, they comprise 40% of employed workers in my area.
Last I heard, about 305 million, not counting the illegals.
What an opportunity to rant about the census.
Our zip code changed in circa 2002 depending on which entity one wants to rely on.
We have received 2 threatening postcards from the feds saying we have to comply.
We have not got our census, nor has anyone in a huge hunk our township, as the addresses are wrong.
They were dumped at the old post office ZIP and were NOT forwarded.
(Insert government)
Just waiting for the idiot to show up on our front door -
