Oswaldo Álvarez Paz's arrest is evidence of Chávez's abuse of the legal system and the silencing of his critics.
The arrest of Oswaldo Álvarez Paz, a former president of Venezuela's Chamber of Deputies, governor of the Venezuelan state of Zulia, and presidential candidate, should concern the entire world because it demonstrates just how far President Hugo Chávez's regime is willing to stray from democratic norms. Standing silent as democracy atrophies in Venezuela is now not only immoral, but is becoming increasingly dangerous for all of Venezuela's people.
Álvarez Paz has a worldwide reputation for being an honourable man devoted to democratic principles. He has bravely sought to alert the world to the persecution that opponents of Chávez and his regime constantly suffer, as well as to the decline of democracy in his country over the decade of Chávez's rule...
The seeming trigger for Álvarez Paz's arrest appears to have been his statements ... about alleged relations between the Venezuelan government, the Colombian guerilla group Farc, and the Spanish terrorist group Eta. Álvarez Paz rightly called for these allegations to be examined.
The arrest is important evidence of the promiscuous abuse of the legal system by Chávez and his functionaries in order to persecute, intimidate, and silence those who criticise his government.

But Sean Penn Said Chavez isn’t a Dictator??????
This play has already run on Broadway all through the 1900’s. The plot is predictable, the outcome already known. The Venezuelans better dispose of this guy in some fashion before he is so ensconced a million will have to die to do the job.
This can’t be. Sean Penn said Chavez wasn’t a dictator and anyone that said so should be thrown in jail.

Wasn’t a judge recently arrested, and being housed with inmates that were sentenced for murder, rape and other heinous crimes? Or is this the same judge? Chavez is a very dangerous man.

Obama and Sean Penn seem to be okay with it. The MSM has its work cut out for it; continuing to glorify Chavez and conceal his domestic atrocities lest the ‘bama looks like he’s supporting a tyrannical dictator.
That was a different judge who was arrested when Chavez did not agree with one of her decisions. I wonder if any of this could serve as a template for when Obamacare is challenged in the courts in the US. How much pressure will US judges be under as they review each of the legal challenges??
Have we cut off relations with them, and stopped giving government reps visas, like we did with Honduras?

This is Chavez’ hand-picked Supreme Court. He has had to threaten them before with arrest. Which should tell us something.
Chavez is FARC. They supported him financially while he was in prison and afterward, and since he became president he has supported them financially. They formed part of his security detail early on. He has given their leadership safe haven and Venezuelan citizenship. He has supplied weapons and has been caught doing it several times. They use Venezuelan territory for their safe rear zone and they keep their high value hostages there.
So the judge is just repeating what everyone basically already knows.
Paging Mr. Pinochet.
They have charged the judge using a law that the Obamists would like to impose here. He is charged with giving false information likely to incite the people.
Does this not sound familiar?
The Obamists want to make it a crime to “lie” in the press, and they want to reserve to themselves the right to decide what constitutes a lie. Once the Chavists have driven the media into a corner, or shut them down, they don’t hesitate to go after even the Supreme Court, even one they hand-picked that doesn’t toe the line. Obama is headed down the same road.
In the case of the good judge, he is speaking the truth, which everyone knows to be true.
