CARACAS, Venezuela Russia has offered to help Venezuela set up its own space industry, including a satellite launch site, as Prime Minister Vladimir Putin made his first visit to the South American country on Friday.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced Russia’s offer before Putin arrived, saying officials would discuss the possibility of setting up a “satellite launcher and a factory.”
The two countries are also discussing new weapons deals, Chavez said Thursday night in televised remarks, without giving details.
Chavez has built close ties with Russia, buying more than $4 billion in Russian weapons since 2005, including helicopters, fighter jets and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles.

The world is becoming far too dangerous for us to have a mental midget in the White House.
The death of the Monroe Doctrine. Obama and his minions are either totally clue-less or doing this on purpose.
Sad state of affairs.
At the same time Obama backs down to Putin on missiles in Eastern Europe, ties with Georgia, and reducing our own nuclear forces.
Now Chavez wants the bomb?
Apparently he wants the same “peace” that Iran has.
A launch site and a nuclear power plant...hmmm...
Morning Cindy.
If Russia cares to help Venezuela atttain nuclear reactors,
Maybe we should help say Poland and other countries along russia’s borders that are not too fond of russia do the same?
Good morning Mr. Boucher.
I agree with you, but it seems to me we’ll have to wait for the next administration in the White House.
I could be wrong.
I hope I am.
How would Putin like it if the Chechens became a nuclear power?
Nice —our own little America-hating Iran in our own backyard.
