St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network today announced it will only hire non-smokers starting May 1.
As the region's second largest employer with over 7,000 employees, St Luke's will be the first in our area to implement such a policy, according to a press release.
"While some may view this as a bold move," states Bob Zimmel, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at St. Luke's, "our organization feels strongly that promoting a healthier workplace benefits everyone."

They will not touch the overweight group who does not exercise, but it's open season on smokers. Sheer idiocy.
I wonder if they will refuse to hire fudgepackers. Now that’s an unhealthy lifestyle.
What if you’re a gay/lesbian/illegal alien? I bet the rules disappear for members of those groups.
Keep the faith.
This is a pretty good time to reduce the staff of health care workers. /s
I was just thinking the same thing. What about those suspected of “unsafe” sex practices. Would they refuse to hire them?
Is this legal; will we see discrimination lawsuits if they refuse to hire smokers????
Being gay is a lifestyle choice.....smoking is a dirty habit/MSM interpretation
Do they still hire tattoo’d and piercing freaks?
Tobacco smokers...not pot smokers, right?
I’d rather smoke my dirty cigarettes than what those gays smoke.
Yep, you got it.
Let St. Luke’s hire whoever they want.
If you want to work there, don’t smoke.
Wow. They will not hire workers with increased risk factors involving lifestyle. Hum. Will they deny employment to people who have unprotected sex or multiple partners? How about those that drive small fuel efficient yet dangerous cars? Will they fire all their current employees? Because, for several reasons, just working in a hospital is a risk factor.
First they came for the smokers.......
Next, if you are a smoker, you will not be given medical care. And many here will no doubt agree.
However, we do like the taxes you smokers pay, 66% of the price in most parts of America.
Canaries, smokers are, as the burden of taxation will now shift to nonpuffers!
Is smoking a preexisting condition?
I am not a smoker (well, a cigar every now and then), but find it offensive that smokers are the constant target of the health nazis.
What is the point of living 130 years if you cannot enjoy the things you want to enjoy?
Employers can discriminate against those who smoke even in their off hours but they cannot make similar behaviorial decisions when it comes to sexual mores.
Funny how that is.
And those who think that “legalizing pot” wouldn’t fall under the same restrictions that tobacco is increasingly being hit with must be smoking something.
If you want to work there, dont be fat.
If you want to work there, dont drive small cars.
If you want to work there, dont engage in homosexual activity.
If you want to work there, dont skydive.
If you want to work there, dont downhill ski.
See the idiocy of your thinking?
They will.
Because the hospital will be so much better off with employee spit cups sitting around everywhere...
