U-S Congressman Dave Obey Holds Town Hall Forum On Health Care
By KBJR News 1
Story Updated: Mar 28, 2010 at 10:41 PM CDT
More than 21,000 Northwestern Wisconsin residents joined US Congressman Dave Obey in a telephone town hall forum tonight... The topic? Health Care Reform.
Multimedia Watch The Video Wisconsin's 7th District Congressman got straight to the answering the controversial question...why did congress act on the bill and why did President Obama Sign it into law?
He says the status quo is unsustainable due in part to the rising cost of health care in this country.
"Just in the past few months we've seen insurance companies raise people's rates by 25, 30, 35 percent. We see half the housing foreclosures in the country are due to people's inability to pay their medical bills or because they got sick and couldn't keep up with their payments. We've seen over 900 bankruptcies in the 7th congressional district alone that were directly traceable to people's health problems."
Congressman Obey says the package will change the rules for health insurance companies...one of the highlights...not allowing people to be denied coverage for preexisting conditions.
Obey says people will see very little change in their health care coverage this year...and that the reform will be phased in over a four year period.
Not everyone who joined in on the call was on board with the reform.
Some residents expressed their concerns with the bill.
I think it’s time to throw the “status quo” out on their asses. Send them to the unemployment line for a while.
What the h3ll is a telephone town hall? This guy won't even face his own constituents in person!
What a coward!!!
The screener must've been busy.
The people in his district should hold a town hall, invite him and his opponent in Nov to talk about it. I bet he does not show up.
Our Congresscritter holds townhall meetings by invitation only—read, if you don’t drink the same brand and flavor of Koolaid she does, you don’t get invited. How’s that for representative government?
Must be afraid of the shoe toss!
Hmmmm, why would the insurance companies raise their rates that much at this time?

The Dems have been using that “status quo” line while ignoring the fact that the GOP members in Congress offered many suggestions for improvement in the health care system.
Half of the mortgage foreclosures are NOT due to health care insurance problems. The fact that people are unemployed is why the foreclosures have occurred, and they are unemployed because the Dems have had control of Congress since the elections in 2006. ...JMO
Hold a rally outside the hall/office w/signs - voters banned by XXX closed door gov’t meeting. If nothing else, the passers by will see his/her name as a negative.
It’s more that your opinion, it’s true!
Oh, they’re already seeing it. Local polling shows her behind EVERY Republican candidate so far this November—even ones not yet named. You know you’re out of touch when “None of the Above” beats you.
A very good question! And if this kind of increase is accurate (which it’s not, across the board), then wouldn’t insurance companies be reporting record profits?
Follow the money and you’d have these jackasses on the ropes in a minute. They can’t explain where the money goes, but somehow magically Obamacare is going to fix everything, treat 30 million new patients and reduce the deficit all at the same time!
Truth is, no one is getting rich, the increased premiums pay for more transplants, MRIs, arthroscopic procedures, and all the other modern medical marvels that we have enjoyed. The only way to reduce HC costs significantly is to withhold, reduce, or ration those medical procedures.
LOL! None of the above!
Thanks for the good news update.
A ‘telephone town hall’ is a waste of time.
You get to listen to the rep answer ‘selected questions’ from his chosen few. Basically, it ia an hour long advert for him.
Screener vs. Screamers
I've been "invited" to a couple of those calls - from Donna Edwards [and she is NOT my Rep].
Its a robo-call, with no warning, asking me to stay on the line, then I will be on a conference call - I just hang up ... shes a DEM.
The 30 million uninsured has never made any sense. Why do they pick that number or close to it out?
