THERE ARE NEEDS, AND THEN, THERE ARE NEEDS
"The bird does not sing because he has an answer; he sings because he has a song." Old Chinese Proverb
Peppermint Patty, of Peanuts cartoon fame, can be impatient at times. You Peanuts fans may recall one of those times. School was about to begin, and Peppermint Patty went shopping. She entered the store, and proceeded directly to the counter, and said, "Sir, I need some school supplies some pencils, some paper, a loose-leaf binder, and some answers. I need a lot of answers."
Most of you have probably encountered someone who continually experiences difficulty in distinguishing NEEDS from WANTS. Conventional wisdom: we need food, air, water and shelter to survive; however, we do not need exotic foods, Caribbean trade wind breezes, Mountain spring water and a castle nestled in the hillsides of Scotland in order to survive. The massive explosion of commercialism causes great difficulties for many adults those who talk about wants as though they are needs. Hmmmmmm, no wonder so many young people are confused.
It is okay, however, to be confused. It is okay to not have all of the answers. More to the point, it is human to not have all of the answers. In light of the human predicament, our greatest need may be what we earnestly want...to be at peace within ourselves, unfettered by all of the trappings of actions and titles that signify to many that we truly are persons of worth.
It is okay to simply be. Consider the bird who sings simply because she has a song.

The Soldier
If I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever England. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam; A body of England's, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given; Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

God Needs You!
If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? say, The Lord has need of it. Mark 11:3
For His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Jesus chose a donkey to serve as His royal transportation. His disciples were instructed to say, The Lord has need of it (Mark 11:3). Isnt it astounding that the Son of God should use such lowly means to accomplish His purposes? Alexander MacLaren commented on this: Christ comes to us in like fashion, and brushes aside all our convenient excuses. He says, I want you, and that is enough.
Think of it! The Creator of the universe needs us and desires to fit us into His eternal design! Though all-powerful and not dependent on any creature, He has chosen to carry out His plans through lowly human instruments. If this were not so, He would have taken us to heaven as soon as He saved us by His grace.
Someone once asked Francis of Assisi how he was able to accomplish so much. He replied, This may be why: The Lord looked down from heaven and said, Where can I find the weakest, littlest man on earth? Then He saw me and said, Ive found him. I will work through him, and he wont be proud of it. Hell see that I am only using him because of his insignificance.
You may be small in your own eyes, but God has need of you!
Yours is a mission you alone can fill,
Whether it be to build or teach or till;
Your goal may still be hidden from your view,
But somewhere God has urgent need of you. Thayer
God is looking for ordinary people for extraordinary work.
