STORNOWAY, Scotland, March 25 (UPI) -- The Ministry of Defense said two Russian Blackjack bombers were found in the skies above Scotland and were escorted out of British airspace.

The ministry confirmed the March 10 incident involved a pair of Royal Air Force Tornado F3 fighter jets, which were used to shadow the Russian bombers until they departed British airspace, The Times of London said Thursday.

Wing Commander Mark Gorringe applauded the response capabilities of the military in regards to the incident.

The Russians see Communism on the rise in the West, and feel threatened!;)

The British sub school is in Scotland IIRC. Makes sense for a fly over.

Umm... Just out of curiosity, how is it that these bombers made into Scottish airspace in the first place. The goal of interception is to intercept before they bust your airspace. The Wing Commander’s applause not withstanding, it was always my understanding that if they made it over your territory without being intercepted prior, the Tornado Team was probably a little late to the party. Maybe I’m missing something here, but there have been investigations for less than this flu, to my way of thinking.

They didn’t penetrate UK airspace. This is simply the media mixing up air defense identification zones with actual territorial airspace. The intercepts happened in International Airspace.

The Russians can legally come up all the way to the 12 nautical mile limit. They conduct the same flights against Canada the US and Japan around the periphery of their national airspace.

Another example of media getting it all mixed up, yet again.
