March 21, 2010 Stupak Announces Deal With White House on Abortion Funding Ban FOXNews.com

Pro-life Democrats have reached a deal with President Obama to ensure that no taxpayer money goes to abortion services, Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., who led Democratic lawmakers opposed to the Senate bill, said Sunday about an arrangement that appeared to cement passage of the massive insurance overhaul.

Stupak made the announcement surrounded by a handful of Democratic lawmakers who had held out their "yes" votes on the bill set for a vote on Sunday. The swing means a movement by as many as a dozen Democrats who had said they wanted stronger restrictions on abortion funding in the 10-year, $870 billion legislation.

"I'm pleased to announce that we have an agreement, and it's with the help of the president and the speaker we were able to come to an agreement to protect the sanctity of life in the health care reform. There will be no public funding for abortion in this legislation," Stupak said.

Stupak announced support for the bill as the White House issued its statement about the executive order.

Boehner: “Pro-Life” Democrats Can’t Hide Behind an Executive Order

Rec’d via e-mail | Sunday, March 21, 2010 | John Boehner

Posted on Sunday, March 21, 2010 12:10:31 PM by kristinn

GOP Leader: “Make no mistake, a ‘yes’ vote on the Democrats’ health care bill is a vote for taxpayer-funded abortions.”

WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement on a potential Executive Order from the White House on abortion:

“The law of the land trumps any Executive Order, which can be reversed or altered at the stroke of a pen by this or any subsequent President without any congressional approval or notice. Moreover, while an Executive Order can direct members of the executive branch, it cannot direct the private sector.

“Because of Roe v. Wade, courts have interpreted the decision as a statutory mandate that the government must provide federal funding for elective abortion in through federal programs. In other words, no Executive Order or regulation can override a statutory mandate unless Congress passes a law that prohibits federal funding from being used in this manner. Legal experts at the US Catholic Conference of Bishops, National Right to Life Committee, Americans United for Life, and Family Research Council have confirmed this view that if the Senate bill is signed into law, it is a statutory mandate for the new health plans to include federal funding of elective abortion. The need for an Executive Order is evidence that this is true, and Congressional Democrats know it. Make no mistake, a ‘yes’ vote on the Democrats’ health care bill is a vote for taxpayer-funded abortions.”

Gee, what a shock.

A Democrat that made a lot of noise about being 'pro-life' and 'held out', got an executive order from Obama telling him what he claims he needed to hear and now, he's a 'yes' vote on the hated government health care takeover bill. I can't imagine that Stupak ever doubted signing on to this bill, he just played a good game of 'chicken' with Obama and the congressional democrats.

How did his district go in the last couple of presidential elections? If Bush and/or McCain won there, it means Stupak can be beaten. Looks like there are at least 2 Republicans taking him on. I will send a contribution ASAP.

This isnt America any longer, Government has now taken complete control. It’s time for another revolution to throw out the Usurper and those who aided and abetted him in his Socialist takeover.

The real question is what pile of pork was promised to Stupak to sell his soul? We know the WH anti-abortion promise is worthless. that’s just a cover.

How sad to have to paraphrase that comment.
