'It was like Zulu' How British troops in Afghanistan fought to the point of exhaustion against the Taliban.
You couldnt make it up, the sergeant added. There were four sangar [sentry posts] in the corners of our compound being hit at the same time. It was 360-degree warfare.
As the base came under intense fire, a group of Taliban used an irrigation ditch to move up to one of the compounds rear walls. There was a real risk that the insurgents might breach the bases security. With little thought for his personal safety, and knowing that drastic action was required, Sgt Bailey, with two of his corporals, filled their ammunition pouches with grenades, fixed bayonets, and charged 50 metres across a field to reach the wall behind which dozens of Taliban were preparing for an assault.
We lobbed high-explosive grenades into the ditch from behind the wall. It worked. We killed or injured them all, said Sergeant Bailey.

Outstanding work in Afghanistan by the British Army.
I wonder if Hillary Clinton will be asking the Argentinian army to help out in Afghanistan... seeing she is on such good terms with them?

Won’t be long before this scenario will be impossible in the US Army. Bayonet training is no longer on the recruit’s agendas in boot camp.

Bloody stupid. They taught us how to use bayonets in the Navy. No real anticipation we’d ever need the skill, but you can never tell.
The example that always comes to my mind of why we train like this are the Royal Navy Hydrographers of HMS Endurance who found themselves alongside Royal Marines when the Falklands Islands were invaded by Argentina. You never know what is going to happen.

From the article:
A spokesman for the Marines Training and Education Command said there was a special bayonet course that all recruits had to complete as part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Programme. They have to go through a whole checklist of bayonet drills, including slash techniques, the spokesman said. Its still relevant for us in Afghanistan.

Marines ain't Army ... they don't train with girls and they still teach how to kill the enemy with bayonets.
They even came up with a new and improved version last year that's just over 13 inches long ...

What a different view than we get from the phoney journalists in the States. For example, you seldom read that we're fighting a multinational force over there - that would reflect poorly on Islam. Better we believe there're just a few benighted Afghan tribesman shooting at us.
Also, stuff like this is happening while the military brass here are phasing out the bayonet. Like taking guns out of fighters in the 60s, I'm afraid we're gonna hafta learn the hardway that the political hacks in the Pentagon can't dictate how battles of the future will be fought. They'll happen how they'll happen.

Bravo!
I love how they lured the taliban out by setting off a fake IED and pretending to be wounded.
