Was the "Greatest Generation" just a bunch of racists? Actor and producer Tom Hanks, promoting his new World War II series "The Pacific," suggested that the war with Japan was really all about American intolerance; and by the way, so is the war on terrorism.
In several interviews, Mr. Hanks presented a version of World War II in which racism played the dominant role. The Japanese "were out to kill us because our way of living was different," he told Time magazine. "We, in turn, wanted to annihilate them because they were different." Forget Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March and Tokyo's territorial expansionism. The United States was really fighting a war against human diversity, according to the former star of "Bosom Buddies."

I told people for years that Hanks and Spielberg were scum making a quick buck of WW2 and WW2 vets. People said oh no he loves vets. No, Hanks is scum.

Un-fricken-believable. Hey Tom!!!!! You're a total moron. The Japanese Empire wanted domination of Asia, and the United States was interfering with their goals. That was why we were attacked (that, and they were running out of supplies due to our cutting off of their access to resources needed to wage their war). The United States, on the other hand, engaged them in combat in order to stop their naked aggression. In case you didn't notice, Tom, Japan became a economic power BECAUSE we rebuilt their country. You don't do that for someone you want to annihilate.

Hanks is an idiot. People misinterpreted his politics because they perceived him as being complementary toward WW2 vets, but he was complimentary only because it was popular to do so. Had this been the sixties, he would have been as antiAmerica as that skank jane fonda.
Other posters also made a great point about our fighting against the Nazi’s - one of the most racist governments ever. If we were only interested in fighting the Japanese because of race, then why did we fight against Germany? Tom Hanks is an @ssclown of the highest order.

Almost all of the WW2 talk is about Germany and Japan. Italians really get a break!
In a way, he’s right. There was tremendous racism involved. At the time, we were willing to use any means neccessary to win. Anyone who thinks overt racism is bad should contemplate the effects of an atom bomb and see which one is worse.
Of course now we are more afraid of offending the sensiblities of goat herders than of being killed by them, which explains why Somalian pirates can attack merchant ships without fear of getting bombed into a vapor.
