Reports: US Wants Israel to Cancel Building Plan

Israeli media reported Monday that the U.S. is pressing Israel to scrap a contentious east Jerusalem building project whose approval has touched off the most serious diplomatic feud with Washington in years.

Top U.S. officials have lined up in recent days to condemn the Israeli plan to build 1,600 apartments in east Jerusalem, the sector of the holy city that the Palestinians claim for their future capital.

The project caused a storm in Washington because it was announced during Vice President Joe Biden's visit to the region last week, badly embarrassing the U.S. and complicating its efforts to restart Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. The Palestinians immediately threatened not to join upcoming U.S.-brokered talks meant to jumpstart negotiations after a 14-month breakdown.

U.S. officials have not disclosed what steps they want Israel to take to ease the crisis, and Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev refused to comment Monday. But Israeli newspapers and radio stations said Washington wants the construction project canceled.

They also reported that the U.S. wants Israel to make a significant confidence-building gesture toward the Palestinians. Suggestions included releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails; turning over additional areas of the West Bank to Palestinian control; removing some of the roadblocks hampering the movement of Palestinians and goods in the West Bank; and easing the blockade on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, media reported.

Washington, they added, also has demanded that Israel officially declare that talks with the Palestinians will deal with all the conflict's big issues, including final borders, the status of Jerusalem, and the fate of Palestinian refugees who fled or were driven from their homes during the war that followed Israel's 1948 creation.

This is the moment, I believe, where all the worst fears about Obama's policy towards Israel comes to fruition.

Obama's inherent anti-Israel policies, his recent speech in Cairo, the specific nationalist hardline policy perspective that has brought world opprobium down on Israel to be the defining point of convergence for Obama in granting him the political security in refusing to back in down, off until Israel puts a halt on settlement construction, circumstances that will only embolden the president to push that much harder to Israel's utter detriment.

According to Bill Kristol on Fox yesterday - the area in question is clearly in Israel land and not under dispute so he cannot understand what the problem is.

I would hope that the people of Israel understand that the President doesn’t speak for the majority of the people of the United States.

I wonder how Obama would like it if Israelis came here and told him he should stop pushing Health care.

I suspect Kristol knows the problem is that Obama & Co. have the same goals as Hamas and Fatah -- Israel's annihilation.

Israel should express a wish that Obama cancel his plan for high-speed rail in Florida.

I mean, we grant veto power to foreign powers when we plan domestic construction jobs, right?

Netanyahu: Israel will keep building in Jerusalem

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said that Israel would continue to build in Jerusalem in the same way that it has over the last 42 years.

“The building in Jerusalem - and in all other places - will continue in the same way as has been customary over the last 42 years,” said Netanyahu at a Likud party meeting.

Obama does not speak for me. I wish they would stop saying “US” and say Obama. Obama is the anti-Israeli Muslim sympathizer, not me.

Jerusalem Construction: Pummeling from Obama Enters Sixth Day

by Gil Ronen

(IsraelNN.com) The administration of US President Barack Obama is continuing to pummel Israel for the sixth straight day over an announcement regarding the construction of housing for Jews in Israel’s historic and biblical capital. The issue erupted into a major diplomatic dispute last Tuesday when Israeli media played up a routine announcement regarding bureaucratic approval of a housing plan in Jerusalem just as Vice President Joe Biden arrived for a visit.

After direct and harsh rebukes from Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, it was the turn of Obama’s top adviser, David Axelrod, to take a swing at Israel Sunday...

The land is definately Israel’s land.

The problem is that the Pali’s have “claimed” the land as theirs.

Wonder if they were to put such a “claim” on San Francisco or Shannon, Ireland, or London, or Dallas or Rio or Belize if they would be getting any sympathy from NObama.

IMO, NObama’s true Muslim colors are sure coming to the surface. I still think he was born in Kenya.

I sure admire Netanyahu.

I also wonder what would be the response if Gold Meier were still there. She took no crap from anyone.
