The construction unemployment rate jumped to 27.1% and construction employment dropped to a 14-year low as another 64,000 construction workers lost jobs in February, according to federal employment figures released recently.

The industry's job losses in February were consistent with the prior six months and not mainly attributable to exceptionally bad weather, according to Ken Simonson, chief economist for The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), Arlington, Va. Simonson added that construction unemployment is at the highest level recorded since the federal government began making the data available in 1976. And he noted that non-residential construction experienced significantly more job losses than the residential sector in February: 53,500 jobs lost versus 10,600.

Simonson also noted that job losses appeared widespread across construction sectors, with non-residential specialty trade contractors experiencing the largest monthly decline of 1.7%.

Since about 80% of construction was taken over by illegals does this really count?

Yeah, but Obama single-handedly saved 72.9% of the construction jobs.

The ‘recession’ is just hitting the Midwest...we’re always a little behind the times. ;)

I gauge how things are going each week by who is advertising the most in our local area.

Realtors are harping on this lasy hoorah for the tax dediuction for buying a home. Ends in about two weeks! Eeek!!)

Landscapers are pretty much BEGGING people to hire them for the spring/summer months.

Dental and doctor and chiro offices are advertising like crazy...no job, no insurance, no patients.

My husband’s work has dropped off enough to notice; computer/IT consultant.

Yep. It’s coming...and it’s not going to be pretty!

They tell me that the economy is growing and that consumers are “storming the malls”, but I don’t see how that could be so.

Yes, McCain said they were doing the fifty dollars an hour construction jobs that Americans will not do.

Just think what this number will look like when Obama pushes immigration-amnesty through.

And yet I know of many construction worker union types that voted for Obama and who proudly display their Obama/Biden bumper sticker next to their Union Local sticker.

How’s that hope and change going for you?

My landlord is an electrician. His last paid job was in May of 2009.

I’m in St. George, UT, about 100 or so miles from Vegas.

For years the only construction workers I’ve seen were illegal aliens, so if they’re losing jobs, adios - NO unemployment benefits for you!

“Landscapers are pretty much BEGGING people to hire them for the spring/summer months.”

The large local landscaper I work for just got through hiring a bunch of people for the Milwaukee area shop. FWIW.

The union idiots here have Obama/Biden 08 bumper stickers on one side and an "I'm the NRA and I Vote" bumper sticker on the other side. They seem to be missing the point.

Given that industrial engineering has be significantly cut back for about a year, it is no surprise.

And since we have been getting steadily worse for the past year, the industrial construction is going to get worse before it gets better.

If those of us who produce the drawings for construction to use (and order the equipment) are barely reaching the bottom today (we hope), I suspect industrial construction has at least nine more months of getting worse before they hit bottom.

You know, I've never ran for political office or worked directly for a political candidate however I could create some really eye opening commercials to reach these folks. So why doesn't the GOP/RNC?
