Palin is much more than a punchline
The Toronto Sun ^ | March 15, 2010 | Monte Solberg

As Sarah Palin put it last week in Calgary, we shouldn’t put our faith in politicians because they will always let us down, and the crowd laughed as if to say, “no kidding!” Then she wisely asserted that our faith should be in ideas.

In other words, we can reliably navigate the rocky waters of history by the ancient lights of the Declaration of Independence or even the old Canadian Bill of Rights because they represent the wisdom of the ages. We should not be so easily enamoured by the latest smooth-talking politicians, pulled as they are between self and public interest.

Yes, those ideas were ultimately packaged up by politicians, but only after the people had debated and digested them and found them agreeable. She went on to explain the ideas behind the Tea Party movement that is now cracking the foundations of both the Republican Party and the grand plans of President Obama.

The good news in Canada is that, based on the evidence to date, we need not fear any personality cults developing around, say, Michael Ignatieff.

Until now, I have doubted whether Palin was the one to carry these big ideas forward. Her performance has staggered between brilliant and disastrous. She gave a terrific acceptance speech at the Republican Convention and cringe-inducing interviews after. She did an awful job explaining her sudden departure from the governor’s position in Alaska.

Having now seen her in action, what I now see is that her conservatism is in her bones, people relate to her and most of the mainstream media will never get her.

She has radar for the aspirations of regular people, causing her to speak past many journalists and what she probably thinks are their dorky questions. Many in the media could spend hours listening to Barack Obama pontificate about Copenhagen or his outreach to the Muslim world. Palin couldn’t care less. She’s all about controlling spending, lower taxes, safe streets and borders and practical solutions for the environment, healthcare and education. That’s it.

Terrific timing

She thinks governments should do a few things and do them well. Politicians, she noted, lose focus. O Canada, is she ever right.

She knows what she believes even if she can’t, in an off-handed way, quote Locke, Burke or Jefferson to explain her political philosophy.

Her timing is terrific. She’s down on big government, too-big-to-fail and grand schemes exactly when the public is weary of all things big, expensive and complex. Her approach is local, affordable and direct.

She doesn’t speak in sound bites. She speaks in stories that reflect values, a powerful way to relate to an audience. She knows better than Obama, Bush or Clinton what moves people, and in that sense is more like Reagan.

She seems more committed to small, common-sense government than any of them and could potentially rally the public to chasten a spendthrift Congress.

The chattering classes will continue to loathe her and, faced with tough opponents, she may still plunge to the earth and lose the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

That said, she is a force to be reckoned with.

I agree, and it looks like she does too. There may be no better way for her to take care of her family than for her to toss the socialists out of our government and if necessary out of our White House.

Considering that Todd is capable of finishing the last 500 miles of the Iron Dog competition with a broken arm, and that he's with the kids whenever Sarah is away, I think he can handle the parenting job when she's out. I did a great job with my own kids whenever my wife had to be elsewhere, and, tough as I like to think I am, he's got me beat. Throw in nurturing and dedicated too, or have you never seen pictures and video of him with his kids? The adorable Palin kids need a parent, but they always have at least one. They also need a free country once they grow up. Can you think of anyone better than Sarah Palin to protect our country? I'm looking, but so far she's got no competition.

I think Obama should be back in Kenya, taking care of his family.

And Michelle should go back to Kashyyyk and look after her family.

Sarah Palin, however, can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Yeah, anyone who is a conservative and has more than two years executive experience. No matter who it is, they will be less polarizing than Palin. There you go. FYI, the military and intelligence agencies protect our country.

The military and intelligence agencies will do a better job with Sarah as the C-in-C.

Sarah doesn’t need to quote Jefferson, who once said “The Best Government is The One That Governs the Least.”

That’s her philosophy.

I would love to see the lamestream media be forced to address her as Madame President some day.

"She did an awful job explaining her sudden departure from the governor’s position in Alaska."

Actually, if one listened to what she said, it was quite clear why she stepped down.

Go Sarah—you are a force to be reckoned with. We need you in Washington! President, Vice President, Senator, or Congresswoman—we need you to speak for the common man. The nation needs more like Sarah. Out of the Tea Parties will come a new generation of solid Conservatives to take up the fallen banner of Ronald Reagan. Sharpen your pitchforks and be ready at a moments notice to ride to the sound of the guns.

The military, yes. The intelligence agencies... not so much. Case in point- the underwear bomber. Plus, when ordinary citizens who express their disapproval of the direction of our government are labeled as terrorists by same government and investigated by our own 'intelligence' services, it's a sure sign that our govenment is overdue for flushing.

FYI, the military and intelligence agencies work for the White House and take orders from a socialist who hates the "fundamentally flawed" Constitution of the United States of America. I'd feel a whole lot safer if they worked for someone who loved our country.
