The Slaughter Strategy
National Review Online ^ | March 14, 2010 | Grace-Marie-Turner

This week will be the last stand for Obamacare, and the trickery that Speaker Pelosi is concocting to get the 2,700-page Senate bill through the House almost defies belief. It’s aptly called the “Slaughter Strategy,” after Rep. Louise Slaughter (D., N.Y.), who chairs the House Rules Committee.

Under this scheme, House members would vote on a bill of amendments to the despised Senate bill, and the Senate bill would be “deemed” to have passed if this companion bill is approved. This is supposed to inoculate House members, who could say they never actually voted for the Senate bill.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich has the best line: Last year, the House was passing bills without reading them. This year, they’re passing bills without voting on them.

If you pull out your copy of the U.S. Constitution, you will find that in Article 1, Section 7, it clearly states that the House and Senate have to pass a bill before it is sent to the president to be signed into law.

I hope the Republicans in Congress are fully prepared to challenge the constitutionality of this unbelievable trick in court.

I hope this stays in the front of peoples minds for a long time. There are absolutely no words to describe the despicable behavior of this government...

Congressmen will not vote on Obamacare to save the Obama adminstration.

This is an election year. All members in the House will have to face voters in meetings this year which is an election year in order to get reelected. They are all keenly aware of the anger at the healthcare plan and that is why they have avoided townhall meetings last year.

That cannot happen this year if they wish to be reelected.

They will only vote for this monstrosity if they believe their personal interests to get reelected are advanced, not Zer0’s.

No, Obamacare will go down in flames.

Isn’t it likely that the Supreme Court would rule such shennigans unconstitutional?

This reeks of criminality. Is it enough just to throw these conniving bums out of office?

I wish I had your confidence in this...

But I do have a thought that gives me some hope - I have seen different views being stated on the ability to repeal this bill after November. Some are saying it will be able to be repealed, others are saying it can’t be.....well, if it was passed illegally, then it should be able to be repealed...right?

How are you going to repeal it even if you have conservative majorities in Congress? You still have the socialist in the WH. He will veto any repeal and there will not be enough votes in Congress to override.

In many ways, this could be the final Waterloo. Everyone knows, from city councils, to county councils, to state legislatures, and up until recently Congress, that all bills have to be voted on. Yeas and Nays. And those that pass move on to law.

If they try to slaughter this, the people around the country will go balistic. Especially since it is a very unpopular bill.

I predict two things to happen. 1. The Slaughter provision becomes so unpopular that it kills the bill by itself. 2. The Constitutionality will be challenged and it would be easy for judges to rule it as unconstitutional. Which means that the ENTIRE bill (not parts) is unconstitutional.

Lastly, the slaughter rule would likely draw 2/3’s of the States out of the woodwork and simply refuse to honor or obey the “law”.

I can easily see the House rats vote for this so-called “Amendments Bill” to “fix” the Senate bill ... just so they can say “I didn't vote for the Senate bill! I voted to fix it!”.

I see by the end of the week that this amendment bill being passed and the House trying to deem the Senate bill passed.

I bet a sawbuck that is what will happen.

Congress cannot pass an amendment to a law that was not enacted, therefore the law must have been enacted! lol

To call this a “rubber stamp” is to demean the good, honest and ethical use of rubber stamps.

There was not even an attempt to test the proposed bill on its merits, by putting it up to an actual vote. The decision has been made in rump committee, that the vague reflection in the image is the EQUIVALENT to the actual bill, and to agree to the vague image is to agree to the whole premise of the proposed bill.

This is a sham. It is unparliamentary, unConstitutional, and irrational, government by acclamation and fiat.

And totally undeserving of our support.

Get a grip...

The reason for this maneuver is precisely because they don't have the votes, which means (try to follow me here) a LOT of the members of congress OPPOSE it.

Not really much of a conspiracy when you think about it.
