Obama Sides with RIAA, MPAA; Backs ACTA

And thus, our true colours reveal. Since Obama was the young newcomer, technically savvy, many of us were hoping that he might support patent and/or copyright reform. In case our story earlier on this subject didn't already tip you off, this certainly will: Obama has sided squarely with the RIAA/MPAA lobby, and backs ACTA. No copyright and/or patent reform for you, American citizens!

Obama made the remarks in a speech at the Export-Import Bank's annual conference in Washington.

"We're going to aggressively protect our intellectual property," Obama said in his speech, "Our single greatest asset is the innovation and the ingenuity and creativity of the American people [...] It is essential to our prosperity and it will only become more so in this century. But it's only a competitive advantage if our companies know that someone else can't just steal that idea and duplicate it with cheaper inputs and labor."

It's grain of salt time. This is clearly not written from a conservative perspective.

Still, for those who have been following this topic, this is new.

I think they should give it a rest. People have a right to benefit from the work they do.

Reforming IP law does not mean that the rights of performers or anyone else should be negated. Obama seems to be a lot more interested in revolution than “reform”.

Copyright laws should be reformed. They last way too long now and are killing innovation.

This means that the US government will continue to (financially) support an industry that is simply outdated, and has failed to adapt to the changing market - which seems remarkably anti-capitalistic and anti-free market, even for a Democratic president.

The writer never gets around to the specific 'reforms' he thinks should take place in this 'simply outdated' industry. I'd bet the 'reform' he wants is similar to the immigration 'reform' leftist want: ignore all violations of the law and weaken the laws that exist. - The excuses and whining these people indulge in to justify their theft of someone else's property never ceases to amaze.

exactly. That’s fave word now for the leftards: reform. Obama trying to describe “protect intellectual property” is like Daffy Duck explaining E=MC2. These geniuses at the MPAA/RIAA could not even answer the most basic question: if I make a copy of my file, is that stealing?

Intellectual Property Rights are the same as Property Rights and must be protected.

Yes but that is not what they are talking about doing. Some of the things I’ve read mentioned are downright scary. I fear someday we will be forced to buy a permit in order to sing Happy Birthday in our homes or face the government breaking down our doors and dragging us away to jail.

You are correct about that. Copyright law was never intended to protect Micky Mouse for 100 years.

“I think they should give it a rest. People have a right to benefit from the work they do.”

Ownership rights to an acre of land is one thing. Should you have the right to have laws passed to magically declare your equity to be five acres, then ten, according to your campaign contributions?
