EDITORIAL: The odds of a government health-care takeover--Public funding for abortion stands...
The Washington Times ^ | March 7, 2010 | Editorial

Democrats are using the nuclear option to try to ram their government takeover of health care through the Senate. The fate of that legislation may come down to a dozen or so members of the House of Representatives opposed to government-funded abortions. Right now, the vote in the House couldn't be more closely divided.

The original version of the bill passed the House in November by a narrow 220 to 215 margin. Since then, three Democratic supporters have left Congress through retirement or death. A fourth, Rep. Eric Massa, New York Democrat, is reportedly resigning today because of charges that he sexually harassed a junior male staffer. The lone Republican who supported the bill has seen the light and switched his vote. All told, if no one else switches votes, the vote count stands at215 in favor and 216 against.

~snip~

In the meantime, Rep. Jim Matheson, Utah Democrat, switched from being against the bill to undecided. But don't worry, the congressman and the White House assure us that Mr. Matheson's flip-flop has nothing to do with the almost simultaneous announcement that President Obama was nominating Mr. Matheson's brother to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

And there will no doubt be PLENTY of dems to take the place of those who have left congress. These will be the phony “NO” voters who were able to con their constituents as their YES votes were not needed. A standard ploy in the house and senate.

Abortion is just a diversion to take focus off of the real reason that government control of health care must not happen.

We mustn't lose focus.

It's isn't constitutional, abortion or not.

I see another "lesser of two evils" vote cropping up.

"Hurray, government controlled health care without abortion!"

"We sure showed them!"

I don’t think putting a bunch of lowlife Chicago thugs, pimps and gangsters in charge of the U.S. Government was a very bright idea. The dumbing down of America by our public “schools” really paid off bigtime for the commie ‘RATS on this one. We’ve got blithering idiots and drooling morons out there voting.

Not much doubt you’re right. If the Rats do pass this fiasco hopefully the Repubs will be able to reverse it when those same Rats go down in flames this November.

If they pass this, my guess is they will, it's the end of The Republic. Not that there is much of it left.

Sad but true. I have seen this coming for a long time.

It’s ironic. This issue will kill the ‘Dims in November, 2010, but Obama can veto any Republican efforts to undo until he is upended in 2012. And the bill will still have only been collecting taxes, not having any real effect until 2014.

So this is a very potent poison-pill that haunt the ‘Dims for years and years.

I know the Republican Party pretty well, and I wouldn't bet on it. More likely they will shrug their collective shoulders and seek to "reform" the system, adding "choice" and "fiscal responsibility" to the government takeover of health care. They will make their peace with the program, the way they make their peace with every other socialist agency of the past 80 years.

In other words, defeat it now or live with it forever.

" And the bill will still have only been collecting taxes."

Not to mention controlling our lives even further. If they pull this off all bets are off. Next will be cap and trade.

Well said and you very well could be right. The thing that could force the issue is if the House or Senate is controlled by Repubs thereby making Zer0 impotent with all his socialist plans, Repubs may just get some backbone.

To no one in particular, just venting

Remember this, there is NOTHING in politics that is done that cannot be undone. NOTHING.

A lot of people are talking about the Constitution being destroyed. BS.

It is not the Constitution that is being destroyed nu the will of the American people.

What makes anyone think that the will of American people will suddenly die if this bill passes.

I ask this open and honestly, BECAUSE every stone and brick that is the ‘White-house’ is there ONLY because ‘We the People’ choose to let it.

Don't tell me that this bill cannot be reversed, because I am not buying it.

The ironic thing is that if the Democrats had listened to Ben Nelson, instead of buying him off, the Stupak amendment would be part of the Senate bill, and this whole thing would be a done deal.

No, as a matter of fact I’m an old retired guy but I refuse to let pessimism ruin the years I have left. I believe our country has survived much through the years and this Marxist turkey in the WH and his thug cronies will not be the end for our great nation if we don’t fold.

It's an epidemic. Does anyone not understand what Matheson is doing? He's peddling his vote, just like Landrieu and Nelson did (although it's not for money this time).

This is why Congress' approval ratings are in the teens, and will stay there regardless the outcome of the actual vote. The system is corrupt because it encourages extortion and backroom deals to get that last vote needed for passage. Pelosi enables this behavior by buying off the holdouts.

Congressmen can defeat this by refusing to declare their votes in advance. Obama/Pelosi can bribe one or two reps but not 50. Without prior knowledge of 99% of the vote, you can't know who to buy off or whether it would do any good if you did.

Exactly! As the years go by it seems more and more elected officials care less and less about integrity and ethics. Not only that but more and more of them are blatant about it and thumb their noses at anyone who might question them. These people are in both parties but at present the Rats have a corner on the market.

That’s what i have been wondering too.

If the dems want to bend and destroy the rules, then so can the Repubs when there is a majority. We can undo this the way the dems are trying to undo the country. there is absolutely no reason we cannot now that they have opened that can of worms.

Part of our problem is that although we who are knowledgeable about what the Democrats are doing are trying to stop it, Joe Blow out there isn’t conceerned.

Case in point: yesterday I was talking to a standard-issue Joe Blow who assured me that Nancy Pelosi and Co. are trying to do the right thing by eventually getting the public option in place so as to give the health insurance industry “more competition.” The guy was so damn dumb I just walked away, shaking my head.
