WASHINGTON - Representative William D. Delahunt will announce today that he will not seek reelection to Congress, ending a nearly 40-year career in elected office and giving Republicans hope of capturing the district, which stretches from Cape Cod to the South Shore.

Discuss COMMENTS (23) “It’s got nothing to do with politics,’’ the seven-term Democrat from Quincy said yesterday. “Life is about change. I think it’s healthy. It’s time.’’

The 68-year-old lawmaker said he has been considering leaving the House for several years, but was talked out of it two years ago by the late senator Edward M. Kennedy, who convinced his friend he should stay and help President Obama with his first-term agenda.

“He said: ‘Come on - this is a new time. It’s a new era. We [will] have a new president. We’re all needed,’ ’’ Delahunt recalled. After Kennedy died last year, Delahunt said, he grappled with whether to stay and work on the issues the senator held dear.

Yeah but on the bright side.. now he can’t convince his friend to stick around.

His influence is gone.

I support Presidential term limits because of the scope of power a President can wield. I too don’t want tyrants ruling us. But there is a huge difference between a President and a member of a large representatitve body.

“Every district should have a right to elect who it wants. That is the essence of representative democracy. I used to support term limits—now I’m much more ambivalent.”

The problem is the ambivalence of the districts. Maybe, just maybe our country has awoken.

I think there should be a mandatory retirement age. Seeing them hauled out on stretchers is not something that gives one confidence in our Congress. Plus who knows how many of them have some issues going on with their staffers essentially doing all the work and I didn’t vote for a staffer.

I think 60 or 65 and you’re out.

As a rule, 70 or so is a good time for politicians to leave office.

Wasn't Reagan 70 when he became POTUS?

Are you ready? Hey, are you ready for this?
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat?
Out of the doorway the bullets rip to the sound of the beat, Yeah
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I’m gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

How do you think I’m gonna get along without you when you’re gone?
You took me for everything that I had and kicked me out on my own
Are you happy? Are you satisfied?
How long can you stand the heat?
Out of the doorway the bullets rip to the sound of the beat (Look out)
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I’m gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

I disagree. We are the term limits. People sometimes have to see how bad things can get. I don’t want people working for me that don’t care about losing their job. Do you think we’d have a chance in hell of stopping this health bill if term limits were in place? Term limits would just mean people would stay asleep politically longer.

Very good point and I did think term limits for congress would be a good thing. It’s a shame it takes a situation like we are in to finally wake people up.

Yes, the huge difference is that these people gold dig in their House or senate seat and amass too much power in their own right. That is the danger.

On the Republican side, state Rep. Jeff Perry is already running and ex-Treasurer Joe Malone will announce his decision on March 21.
