Five European states back burka ban.Voters support push by Sarkozy

More than half of voters in four other major European states back a push by France's Nicolas Sarkozy to ban women from wearing the burka, according to an opinion poll for the Financial Times.

As Mr Sarkozy presses ahead with plans to ban the wearing of the burka in public places, the FT latest Harris poll shows the move is not just strongly supported in France, but wins enthusiastic backing in the UK, Italy, Spain and Germany.

The poll shows 70 per cent of respondents in France said they supported plans to forbid the wearing of the garment which covers the female body from head to toe. There was similar sentiment in Spain and Italy, where 65 per cent and 63 per cent respectively favoured a ban

The strength of feeling in the UK and Germany may seem particularly surprising. Britain has a strong liberal tradition that respects an individual’s right to full expression of religious views. But here, some 57 per cent of people still favoured a ban. In Germany, which is also reluctant to clamp down in minority rights, some 50 per cent favoured a ban. This poll shows that the number of people in France opposed to the burka is going up and that is the product of debate on burka and national identity, said Professor Patrick Weil, an expert on national identity at the Sorbonne. But the figure is clearly going up in other countries in Europe like the UK as well, and that reflects the growing concern that there is about this issue in some parts of Europe. In the US, concerns about the issue are far less strong than in Europe. Just 33 per cent of Americans surveyed by Harris supported a ban, a far lower figure than the 44 per cent who said they supported it.

*** FRENCH POLITICS AND CULTURE PING LIST *** FREEPMAIL ME IF YOU WANT TO JOIN ***

Sarko has taken the lead in beginning the dialogue on French National Identity. The French people are enthusiastic about it. It is catching on in the rest of Europe as well.

Hopefully this will help boost his abysmal poll numbers. His UMP Party risks losing the upcoming regional elections.

Even though 2012 is 3 years away, Sarko needs to get back his momentum.

Doesn’t matter what % is against the 7th century slave wardrobe the muslims demand their females to wear in public. The islam appeasing liberals in the higher levels of power in Europe will never make this an actual enforceble law. The muslims have learned all to well that they can exploit our courts, our western concepts of freedom of expression, speech, religion, and civil rights, to push the exact opposite of those concepts, Islam and Sharia Law. Look how Spain predictibly acted after their trains were bombed by the religion of peace. Really think they have the guts to enforce a burka ban after the religion of peace calls again?
And it won’t even have to come to that. All the Saudis and muslim brotherhood backed organizations in europe and other westernized nations have to do is claim they are being oppressed and persecuted even though they promote the most intollarant and violent of the major religions on the planet. The liberals will fold like a deck of cards and back them 110% when push comes to shove. Painfully ironic, because in their countries, those that promote concepts like free speech, freedom of religious worship, and democratic political concepts are the first to be imprisioned, hung from a construction crane, or beheaded.

And it is too little too late. The numbers tell the tale. As soon as they can elect their own to the governmental bodies, they will. Spain has the first all Islamic party running in the next year or two in a local election. When they can elect their own, the good news is - it puts the socialists out of business. The bad news is, they elect Hammas or, at best, a Turkish style government that barely keeps the radicals out of power.

Agreed. Look no further than Malmo, Sweden. The politicians are already coddling the muslims while allowing the jewish population to be treated like 1930's Germany all in the name of staying elected.

Europe is already dead man walking. Major parts of many countries are "no-go" zones for non-muslims like the suburbs of Paris, and major portions of major cities like Malmo & Rotterdam.

Take the Netherlands as a perfect example of national suicide. They've allowed close to a million muslims to immigrate there, many highly radicalized Moroccans who refuse to integrate into Dutch society. They slammed up over 400 mosques, and 50 islamic only elementary schools. As a followup after the Theo Van Gogh murder, 13 churches were attacked by muslims to drive the point home of whats been sown.

And as for the predictable outcome of politics: "In 2006, Netherlands Minister of Justice Piet Hein Donner suggested they might accept Sharia law in a constitutional manner. "It is a sure certainty for me: if two thirds of all Netherlanders tomorrow would want to introduce Sharia, then this possibility must exist. Could you block this legally? It would also be a scandal to say 'this isn't allowed! The majority counts. That is the essence of democracy."

Sounds like the Marxists in this country.

It seems fascist to me, as an American, to ban a style of dress specifically because of its asociation with a religion, in order to promote a “national identity.”

Then again, I have often thought it curious that when you scratch a European socialist (or an American socialist too, I guess), you find a fascist right beneath the surface.
