Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Delegate Daryl Cowles has introduced several bills that would protect families from unreasonable government intrusion into the family. One of these bills, House Bill 4480, provides that prosecuting attorneys have the right and responsibility to represent the public interest in protecting abused and neglected children when their position conflicts with the position of the Department of Health and Human Resources. If passed, this bill would help strengthen the parent-child relationship and protect the right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children. However, with only a few days remaining in the session, public support is needed to give these bills a fair hearing. Please take action immediately to protect West Virginian families.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please contact Tim Miley, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and ask him to place HB 4480 on the House Judiciary Committee agenda as soon as possible so it can be voted on by the full House of Delegates this session. Because this bill affects all West Virginia families, it is not necessary to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Give the following message in your own words:
"Please place HB 4480 on the Judiciary Committee agenda as soon as possible as well as Delegate Cowles' other bills designed to provide additional protections for West Virginia children and families. HB 4480 is important to protect families from unreasonable state interference and intrusion. It will help to ensure that the public interest is considered when the Department of Health and Human Resources investigates West Virginia families. The public interest is currently not taken into consideration by prosecuting attorneys who simply represent the Department's interest."
