Jim Bunning's lone stand

Republicans were hoping that the Senate would quickly and quietly clear a short-term extension of unemployment insurance along with other popular benefits this week.

But Sen. Jim Bunning’s (R-Ky.) defiant stand against that effort has put his party in a jam: should it back the eccentric Republican over his concerns about deficit spending, or should it cut him loose and let him take the sole blame for the discomfort caused by Congress’ failure to act?

And the answer to that question grows even thornier given that the senior senator from his state is Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader who has grown apart from Bunning over the past year.

Before Bunning took the extraordinary move of mounting a single-handed battle against the bill, McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) agreed to move it – meaning that if the GOP leader sided with Bunning he’d be accused of flip-flopping on their agreement and for holding up a range of benefits for millions.

I think it is a brilliant move.

Come Monday, Seniors are going to get a glimpse of Obamacare up close and personal.

STAND JIM! STAND!!!

Nevertheless he that stands steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but has power over his own will, and has so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, does well.

Personally, I find it outrageous that people who had nothing to do with this downturn are gettng the shaft, while those who created it are getting bailouts. Anyone who thinks this move will help Republicans is nuts, plain and simple. Everyone I know knows of several people who are unemployed....and the jobs listings do not change from week to week, for the people here who say “just get a job”.

(and I say this as one who is currently unemployed)

McConnell should be retiring not Bunning.

Why do you think this has to do anything with unemployment.
This specifically applies to Medicare Payment to Docs.

I understand why he is doing it. And ofcourse AFTER he makes his point it will be passed.

They have passed this rule along for years, hiding the poor reimbursements for Docs.

What do you think is going to happen when the 500 billion cuts in Medicare kick in. He is just giving the public a preview.

Good for Buning. Fact is that weasel McConnell sells conservatives out every chance he gets all in the name of compromise and bipartisanship

Agreed. I admire his principles, but as far as the politics of this go he might just as well stick a .45 in his mouth and pull the trigger. There needs to be a big-picture fix at some future date when long-term unemployment is not in double digits.

So what is your solution? Quadruple the deficit again? Hire a few million government employees? Pass Obamacare while we are at it?

You can not say you’re against deficit spending and then be all for it. Jim Bunning is at least taking a stand. Enough is enough. Good for him.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:
http://economicspolitics.blogspot.com/2009/05/tricare-for-life-is-obama-trying-to.html
This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.
Snip The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Snip

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

Jim Bunning is at least taking a stand.

Unless I am mistaken, his argument is that the unemployment extension should be paid for out of the remaining $400B of the stimulus instead of new funds.

What many miss is that if HARD-WORKING people who are currently unemployed do not get an extension, many will have their homes foreclosed etc. This will only break state budgets, which in turn will most likely be bailed out.

I’ve been saying this for years. All it takes is one senator to start objecting to unanimous consents.

And an objection doesn’t mean that a bill will die, it just means that the senators will have to vote on it and put their names on the record (oh the horror!)

They can also change some of their silly rules that take up so much time, like the cryout name system when nobody’s in the room and then they go to the desk to vote.

There are no damn jobs here and plenty of people who need jobs. If we are going to spend billions to send all over the world where the hell is the priority? The government has spent billions billions on dumb stuff and when something like unemployment is decided NOT a priority something is wrong. We also pay taxes on unemployment as well so there goes revenue. Between my husband and I we have paid thousands and thousands dollars in taxes and we need it now because of the bs stuff in Washington which has brought this country to where it’s out.
