Yeah she is so "leftist" and "failed as a comic" that she was a comedian at the Laugh Factory for the 2004 Republican National Convention delegates. She and her family escaped Russia back in the 1980's when the Soviets weren't exactly friendly to Jews and she is adamantly Conservative.

Many people who left the USSR in the 1980s were communists who had fallen out of favor with the people in power. They had enough money and connections in order to bribe their way out. If anything, her family should have stayed and suffered the same fate as her comrades.
Like most communists they hate the Catholic church for being a beacon of truth. She is playing Serbs for fools and using them as convenient proxies in her war against the Catholic church.
