Former Obama adviser: "Anonymity is over' on Web, what you shop for will be known

A former White House official believes "anonymity is over" in the blossoming world of Internet commerce.

When asked as part of the Pew Center's latest Web survey how online businesses and services might treat users' identities 10 years from now, former National Economic Council member Susan Crawford predicted: "We'll be known to others as a condition of doing all we want to do."

"That may not be all bad news -- we'll get loyalty points, after all -- but we'll have to ensure that traditionally anonymous political speech and criticism is somehow protected," added Crawford, who assisted the White House when it drafted its team to lead the Federal Communications Commission. She took a one-year sabbatical from her faculty position at the University of Michigan Law School in 2009 to be President Barack Obama's special assistant for Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy.

"When it comes to commerce, anonymity is over,” she said.

The question of how Internet companies, services and networks might treat our identities in 2020 is one of many areas explored by the Pew Internet and American Life Project's annual "Future of the Internet" survey, released Friday. The project asks industry experts to hypothesize how the always-burgeoning medium might look in the not-distant future.

If this happens then I guess all FERPA and Privacy Act rules are null and void across the board.

There’s never been real anonymity on the net. Anybody that can get to the logs can trace what you’re doing.

It’s not like she’s announcing some government policy. This is the way it is now. Those supermarket club cards aren’t about giving a loyal customer a break. They’re about compiling data that they can microanalyze. The discounts are a bargain over what it would otherwise cost to have that much information on your customers.

What’s the libertarian take on this, given that it’s not the government that’s compiling your consumer information, but private business?

That’s why I never use the groc card, even as points unless the deal is a really good one. Same thing with rebates. It’s better to buy stuff with INSTANT savings instead of filling out those forms just to get 10% back.

exactly, and of course the Verizon guy is basically saying this is a wonderful thing. Because he wants his company to be able to control what websites you get steered to, based on those shopping preferences.

Net neutrality is something that I think the Dems are WAY ahead of us on. I see no reason why Verizon should be able to say what I get to see on the web.

There’s anonymity on the web?

Hackers know better.

The fact that a government stooge, specifically someone formerly the Obama administration (Susan Crawford), is discounting the future and importance of Internet anonymity at all should be fairly alarming to anyone.

What does she know that she’s not telling us?

I realize that a government official saying the sky is blue automatically makes some people question what they know about the sky, but do you really believe that you have internet anonymity now? That you ever had it? And again, it's private business that's compiling data on your buying habits so that they can market to you more efficiently. It's not the government that cares that men between 24 and 36 tend to buy more expensive cold cuts on Wednesdays in the third fiscal quarter between 4 PM and 6 PM in the northeastern US if you put them on aisle end cap.

The question is, do you want government regulation on businesses compiling this information and selling it to other businesses?
