MSNBC’s Maddow Regrets Misquoting Senator Inhofe But Then Misquotes Him Again, Says Inhofe’s Office

(CNSNews.com) – MSNBC news host Rachel Maddow corrected the record for misquoting Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) on her Feb. 9 broadcast -- when she incorrectly claimed that the senator had praised federal economic stimulus spending. But she apparently has misquoted the senator again and, as Inhofe’s office told CNSNews.com, “We appreciate that Rachel is a proud liberal defending the massive government spending bills now flowing out of Washington, but hope she will consider making another correction.”

Maddow, host of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” a political news and commentary program on MSNBC, said on Feb. 9, “Senator Jim Inhofe of denying global warming fame, he trashed the stimulus, voted no, and then praised its effect in his home state by saying it would help spur additional economic growth.” (The $787 billion economic stimulus bill became law in February 2009.)

But on Feb. 10 of this year, Maddow told her audience: “Well, today we heard from one of the Republican politicians that we called out, Republican Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma. His office was upset with our coverage last night. And I will tell you, we do have a correction to make.”

Maddow then referred to her previous night’s comment, saying, “That quote -- that quote that I read from Senator Inhofe last night, ‘help spur additional economic growth,’ was, in fact, Senator Inhofe praising, a federal spending project in his state. It was not, however, Mr. Inhofe specifically praising stimulus spending in his state. Senator Inhofe`s office is right about that specific quote and I am happy to correct the record, and I regret the error.”

Then Maddow read what she called a “hypocritical” quote from the senator, apparently to back up her original claim.

“In April of last year, the Environmental Protection Agency committed $25 million to a cleanup effort in Oklahoma,” said Maddow on Feb. 10. “As the Tulsa World pointed out at the time, quote, ‘The new money comes from stimulus spending as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.’ And -- wait for it -- Senator Inhofe told the Tulsa World that cleanup effort -- that partially stimulus-funded cleanup effort in his home state -- was, quote, ‘great news,’ and that they were, quote, ‘necessary funds.’”

Maddow went on to cite Inhofe from a CNSNews.com story.

“So, there’s the senator in black and white praising the use of stimulus funds in his own state,” said Maddow. “Of course, it almost goes without saying that Senator Inhofe has made quite a show of denouncing the stimulus as a complete waste, telling CNSNews.com, quote, ‘I don’t think it failed, I know it. There’s no stimulus in the stimulus bill. It was nothing but social engineering and welfare.’”

“When asked about the idea of a second stimulus, Senator Inhofe said, quote, ‘Why put more money into something that doesn’t work?’ That was three months after Mr. Inhofe applauded $25 million of stimulus spending in his -- stimulus spending in his state as, quote, ‘great news.’”

Matt Dempsey, communications director for Inhofe issued the following statement to CNSNews.com regarding Maddow’s comments: “Rachel Maddow should be congratulated for making the correction to her report regarding Senator Inhofe and his opposition to the $787 billion stimulus bill passed by the Democrats last year. It shows she is willing to take the time to listen and admit when she is wrong. Maddow said on her show, ‘Senator Inhofe’s office is right about that specific quote and I am happy to correct the record and I regret the error.’ As it turns out, we understand she was recycling old talking points from a Think Progress campaign that we had debunked last August.”

“Yet after the first error in her reporting, it appears Rachel has made another,” said Dempsey in the statement. “She would now like her viewers to believe that because Senator Inhofe praised stimulus money going to clean-up of the Tar Creek Superfund site in Oklahoma that Senator Inhofe is somehow a hypocrite. Hardly! Senator Inhofe faulted the massive stimulus bill specifically because it included 93% wasteful spending on social engineering and welfare programs and only 7% stimulus. We only wish that we could applaud more than the 7%!”

“We appreciate that Rachel is a proud liberal defending the massive government spending bills now flowing out of Washington, but hope she will consider making another correction,” reads the statement.

Liberals, especially smug liberals, may drive me to distraction but speaking as objectively as possible I have never seen a media figure/commentator run roughshod over the truth as frequently as Maddow.

If it is possible, she is even more annoying than Olberman. And that whole smugness pose does seem to be a particularly liberal posture.

Agreed. She looks like a shifty teenage boy from down the street that will help you bring in the groceries, but then try and **** the cat once your back is turned.
