School District Cancels Offer of Taxpayer-Funded iPods for Parents

A Florida school district has canceled its plans to spend $350,000 in taxpayer money to buy thousands of iPods for parents of special-needs students after it was erroneously reported that federal stimulus funds were covering the costs.

Officials in Polk County announced Tuesday their intention to distribute free iPod Nanos to the parents of children with disabilities if they completed a 10-minute survey of just 26 multiple-choice questions about school and teacher quality.

But those plans barely lasted a nanosecond, school officials told FoxNews.com.

"[W]e're going to be pulling the whole thing," said Nancy Woolcock, assistant superintendent of learning support for Polk County, which has more than 10,000 students with disabilities.

"(The money) needs to go to the students, not to the parents, so I will use that $350,000 to provide instructional materials to the students at the school sites."

The district had planned to buy the iPods with money left over from the 2008-2009 school year, part of a package of taxpayer dollars fed in as funding from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, school administrators said.

Sounds like this school district is in need of a taxpayer revolt.

So you have to bribe the parents, who get free( sort of ) schooling ( kind of ) to take a quality control survey? How about no answer, you keep the kid type deal?

Duh.

“The district had planned to buy the iPods with money left over from the 2008-2009 school year...”

I guess the thought of lowering taxes since they seem to have more funding than they need never crossed their mind.

The district had planned to buy the iPods with money left over from the 2008-2009 school year...Boy, if I lived there I'd be looking at my property takes, and sharpening up my pitchfork for the next school board meeting (or whatever body sets the tax rate). They are getting so much money from the feds that they have money left over. So why not LOWER THE LOCAL TAXES that support schools? Dirty little secrets coming out, nutcase school administrators not happy. Local officials need to have their feet held to the fire.

“Use it or lose it” idiocy... Something families and individuals always do with their own money...NOT!

And, just think, the fact that the idea got as far as it did meant that it wasn’t just one clueless Peter principled loose cannon decision maker who thought this was an acceptable option.

"We'll give you all free ipods if you say really, really, nice things about us. They're free, free, free!"

"(The money) needs to go to the students, not to the parents, so I will use that $350,000 to provide instructional materials to the students at the school sites."

"Darn it! They caught us. Now those darn kids are going to get all the money. Grrrr."

The Polk County school system is a joke!!! They reject qualified special education teachers. Hire pedophiles as elementary school principles!

If you live in Polk, a person has 2 options: Private or Home School

Around 90,000 students total in Polk County and they figure 10,000 are disabled?!?

What utter BS!

No wonder we refer to the school system as POLK County Schools = People Of Little Knowledge.

Luckily my grandkids are private schooled as long as Mom and Dad have jobs.

“Left over money” — there’s the problem, right there. Only idiotic government bureaucrats could dream up such an insulting concept. The POF household has certainly never experienced such an idea.
