Health care poll: 63 percent say "keep trying"

A 63 percent majority of Americans, notably Democratic and Independent voters, want Congress to "Keep Trying" to pass a comprehensive health care reform plan, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll.

The survey, conducted Thursday through Monday, queried more than 1,000 voters across the country, and also asked which party is responsible for lack of cooperation in Washington, D.C. The margin of error was 3.5 percent.

The key question: "Do you think lawmakers in Washington should keep trying to pass a comprehensive health care reform plan, or should they give up on comprehensive health care reform?

Sixty-three percent said "Keep Trying" while 34 percent opted for "Give Up." By an 88 percent-to-8 percent margin, Democrats opted for trying. So did Independents, by a 56 percent-to-39 percent division.

By contrast, by a 55 percent-to-42 percent margin, Republicans opted for the give-up option.

The poll asked opinions of how well or badly President Obama and Republicans in Congress are doing on working with each other.

The presidential question: "Do you think Obama is doing too much, too little, or about the right amount to compromise with Republicans on important issues?

Forty-five percent said Obama is doing the "Right Amount," 44 percent felt he is doing "Too Little," with 9 percent opting that the president is doing "Too Much" to cooperate with Republicans.

A similar question was posed about the GOP: "Do you think Republicans are doing too much, too little or about the right amount to compromise with Obama on important issues."

The result was a quite critical view of Republicans.

Just 8 percent said they are doing "Too Much" to cooperate with a Democratic president, with 30 percent opting for the "Right Amount" of cooperation. But 58 percent said Democrats are doing "Too Little."

With Independent voters, 56 percent felt Republicans in Congress are too unbending, while 50 percent had that opinion of Obama. A total of 28 percent felt both sides are doing too little toward seeking and finding agreement.

The Republicans need to get serious about acknowledging there is a widespread perception of a problem and explain to the public that the only real sustainable lomg-term solution is non-socialistic measures to reduce health care costs for all Americans. Just saying no to socialism is only one half of the task. The American people do not like socialism, but they also look dimly upon a perceived callousness to the difficulties of many Americans in being able to afford health insurance.

In another non-liberal “poll” just discussed on FNC, 75% say dump it or start over. I wouldn’t put too much stock in an abc/Wapo poll.

Rubbish.

Maybe 1000 Democrats contacted in Seattle indicated that poll, but that is not representative of America as a whole.

Correct. That is why they have to push hard for all three pillars of a genuine reform stool:

  1. Tort reform.
  2. Ability to sell health insurance across state lines without the larded up mandates.
  3. Removal of requirement to treat people who are not even in this country legally at ER's for non-emergency conditions with a kind but firm "Go to your local drugstore, buy a non-prescription medicine, take it with some hot chicken soup and go to bed" or whatever.

I agree. Dump it and start over with transparency and make it competition driven and lawyer less.

I think the two results are not incompatible. One one hand, the American public does not favor intrusive government solutions, but they also see a need to lower the burden. The Republicans need to be serious about offering an alternative plan to address this health cost burden.

I prefer they keep on trying (but never finishing). It keeps them away from other stuff.

If the Republicans had done those things you lusted a few years ago when they had the numbers, we might not be facing the socialistic alternative now.

Health care poll: 63 percent say "keep trying"

How timely and convenient for the Dims. Won't even waste time reading this. There need to be some reforms in health care, but only after this entire Obamacare monstrosity is dumped and some time has passed.

The Republicans need to be serious about offering an alternative plan to address this health cost burden.

They could be as serious as a heart attack and it still won't matter so long as the left wants to go the "comprehensive" route.

We are dealing with POLITICIANS here.

D.C. Beltway push. “We’re gonna get our MBS money lost and then some.” “And then some by fines, fees, regulations, requirements, mandates for our money anytime we need it.” Fine-threats, jail-time threats.

It is a question of priorities. Jobs are number 1 right now. Health care can wait.

“A 63 percent majority of Americans, notably Democratic and Independent voters”

How much more tilted do these lames have to be to try get people to think ‘a majority of Americans’ want this crap?

Worthless!
