Patrick Daley redeployed by Army to undisclosed location

Mayor Daley’s son Patrick has left his home and his job in Moscow after being summoned back to active duty in the U.S. Army, the mayor disclosed today.

“My son had a responsibility. He served fours years in the military, and he’s re-deployed. He will serve his country just like every other son and daughter in this country does the same thing,” the mayor said.

The mayor made it clear that his son did not re-enlist, but was summoned back to active duty. It was not known whether Patrick Daley was an Army reservist.

The mayor refused to say where Patrick is deployed amid concern for his safety. But he did not correct a reporter who asked about Patrick’s redeployment to “a combat area.”

“He has a responsibility as he told me. Once he got the notice, unfortunately, he had to leave Moscow, leave his job. He came home, then took his assignment appropriately,” the mayor said.

“It’s a confidential thing he has to do. He doesn’t want any major publicity where he is or where he’s going. It’s his life. It’s not your life. He’s not a public official. He’s just another son or daughter who has taken the request very seriously to do it.”

But, Daley acknowledged that Patrick’s re-deployment is weighing heavily on his parents.

“It’s hard for every family — any family member [when] their sons or daughters, husbands or wives or brother or sister [is called back to duty]. But, he has that responsibility to respond in the appropriate way,” the mayor said.

Patrick Daley has already served one tour of duty in Afghanistan. His re-deployment to a combat zone — there or elsewhere — comes at a difficult time for the Daley family.

The mayor’s wife, Maggie, suffered two more cancer setbacks last year, the most recent in December, when she was left using a wheelchair while undergoing radiation treatments for a malignant tumor in her right leg.

Last month, the mayor cancelled his public schedule after his wife suffered an adverse reaction to her cancer treatment.

Patrick Daley enlisted in the Army in 2004 at age 29 after graduating with honors from the University of Chicago's MBA program. He was initially assigned to the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, N.C.

In 2007, the Chicago Sun-Times disclosed that the mayor’s son and nephew had held a hidden ownership stake in a sewer cleaning company that won millions of dollars in no-bid contract extensions from City Hall.

At the time, an emotional Mayor Daley acknowledged that his son made a mistake and denied prior knowledge of Patrick’s investment.

“I did not know about his involvement in this company. As an adult, he made that decision. It was a lapse in judgement for him to get involved with this company. I wish he hadn’t done it,” the mayor said at the time, reading from a prepared statement.

“I know the expectations for elected officials and their families are very high. Rightfully so. Especially, for me, as I know on the daily basis.”

At that point, Daley choked back tears as he struggled to continue. “I hope those people understand that Patrick is a very good son. I love him. And Maggie and I are very proud of him.”

A federal grand jury and the inspector general’s office are still investigating the sewer deal and the mayor’s nephew’s involvement in a risky real estate venture involving $68 million in city employee pension funds.

With his academic credentials he could easily have gone to OCS...In a sense, he's kind of a Patrick Tillman of the business world. I loathe his father, but indeed, God bless this soldier.

Until I’m shown evidence to the contrary, it looks like this apple might have rolled some distance after falling from the tree.

Patrick started his undergraduate career at West Point, but withdrew before he would have been committeed to a military career. He went on to finish his undergraduate career and then got an MBA at the University of Chicago, which has an academic reputation as good as the Harvard Business School. With that name and the U of C MBA he could have made an extremely lucrative career in Chicago. But when the Iraq war came up he enlisted - yep, enlisted, instead of finagling a commission. So good for him.

Good point!
I’ll cut him some slack until I hear more.

Having lived in MN for so many years and watching Chicago ship homeless to MN, in my mind, the Daley name is almost as bad as Kennedy’s.

I agree. His father is pond scum but the son seems to have some likeable characteristics. God bless him. Undisclosed location seems to sound like a desk job because if the term “undisclosed location” denotes something not in Iraq or Afghanistan.

HIDDEN DEAL | Mayor cites son’s ‘lapse in judgment,’ but won’t take questions

Being it’s Chicago, being it’s a corrupt swamp, and being there’s still an ongoing investigation about his business deals, my antenna are a little tweaked. I sincerely hope it’s legit. God bless him for his service .. past and apparently present.
