MSNBCs David Shuster became a fan of Fox News late-night comedy/news hybrid Red Eye just in time for its three-year anniversary.
And its coming at a time when the 3amET show is seeing big ratings in the A25-54 demographic even topping CNN prime time last week.
Just like when we highlighted the shows ratings in September 2009 (which the FNC advertising department enjoyed as well, taking out full-page ads in the New York Post and others), the ratings for last week show Red Eye beating CNN again. This time, the show had better ratings in the A25-54 demographic than Campbell Brown at 8pmET and Larry King at 9pmET, and tied Anderson Cooper at 10pmET (Monday-Thursday).
For Fridays third-anniversary show, there was a look back at the past few years, including the second episode which was fairly raw. And featured an unkempt, pre-Big-Everything Andrew Breitbart.
I want to thank our awesomely awesome fans for watching and supporting us over the last three years, said Gutfeld. And if you didnt support us, youre worse than Media Matters.
Heres the Greg-alogue from Friday night, featuring David Gregorys hair, a lot of cat jokes aimed at Andy Levy and insults aimed at Bill Schulz. And more robots:
There’s also always something nice to look at on that show,
by chance I guess.
“”Fox News 3amET comedy/news hybrid Red Eye is in a league of its own when it comes to cable news shows. But that doesnt mean it isnt a player in the ratings.
Despite its late (or early, depending on your sleep habits) start time, the ratings for the show continue to improve, and surprisingly, top some cable news competition you might not expect.
Last week we were forwarded this message board post on ActivityPit.com Red Eyes online community that feeds its dedicated base of fans. Heres a part:
The ratings came out for September and Red Eye is up over 30% in total viewers and up 50% in the key demo (25-54) since July. They have more overall viewers than every CNBC show, every MSNBC show that is on before Hardball, most of HLN, and American Morning on CNN.
The show is looking up year-to-year as well. Compared to September 2008, the program grew 23% in total viewers and 43% in the A25-54 demographic. But lets look at the individual shows. Last week we wrote about the 13 shows at the top of the ratings in September all on Fox News. Red Eye, naturally, wasnt one of them. Heres where they fell this is the full chart for September programs.
Red Eye averaged 432,000 total viewers and 202,000 in the demo. Lets deal with the demo first CNNs 8pmET show, hosted by Campbell Brown, averaged 191,000 in the demo. Lets just let that one sink in Fox News had more people in the all important A25-54 demographic watching their channel at three in the morning (east coast time) than CNN had for the show that leads off their prime time. This says as much about Fox News as it does about CNN. Wow.
In total viewers (and demo), Red Eye beat the cable news competition three hours later. All three other morning shows, MSNBCs Morning Joe, CNNs American Morning and HLNs Morning Express had less viewers in September.
Part of the credit for this can be attributed to Red Eye, which has been consistently growing since its debut in 2007 and built up a solid following. Host Greg Gutfeld and regulars Bill Schulz and Andy Levy have been effective in connecting with their viewers through new media and other means. Some credit goes to Glenn Beck, whose repeat at 2amET was added a few months ago, providing a nice lead-in for the show. But in general, this shows not only the continued and expanding dominance of Fox News, but a major boost for the program some people thought wouldnt survive.
It has, and continues to defy the odds, pulling in strong ratings, big guests and interesting segments at an hour normally reserved for re-runs and infomercials.””
this is really too FUNNY -— Fox News at 3 AM ET doing better than CNN and PMSNBC in “prime” time???? haaa haaaaaa
Getting beat by a program in the middle of the night has to humiliating.
I had never seen RedEye before. I checked out a few clips after seeing this news and it actually looks pretty entertaining. Of course, I’ll need to record it because the 3am time is a little rough.
This is real easy to understand if its true that Fox is the only fair and balanced channel on the air and all the others—all the others—spew some form of liberal bias. If half the population is conservative, Fox’s shows will continue to have ratings increases and the lib shows will wither away and only survive via a subsidy of some sort from the networks’ money makers.

Part of my evening ritual is setting up to record “Red Eye”, then we watch it over dinner the following evening.
I bring the lotion.
With a handle like Coaltrain, you never worked the graveyard shift?
“you never worked the graveyard shift?”
Now that you mention it, I have...but it was 30 years ago.
Ken and Edna
Ken and his wife Edna went to the state fair every year,
And every year Ken would say,
‘Edna, I’d like to ride in that helicopter’
Edna always replied,
I know Ken, but that helicopter ride is fifty bucks,
And fifty bucks is fifty bucks
One year Ken and Edna went to the fair,
and Ken said,
‘Edna, I’m 75 years old
If I don’t ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance’
To this Edna replied,
“Ken that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks’
The pilot overheard the couple and said,
‘Folks I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don’t say a word I won’t charge you a penny!
But if you say one word it’s fifty dollars.’
Ken and Edna agreed and up they went
The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard
He did his daredevil tricks over and over again,
But still not a word...
When they landed, the pilot turned to Ken and said,
‘By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t
I’m impressed!
Ken replied,
Well, to tell you the truth,
I almost said something when Edna fell out,
But you know
Fifty bucks is fifty bucks!
His request approved, the CNN News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight.
He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport.
Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger.
He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, ‘Let’s go’.
The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off.
Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, ‘Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.’
‘Why ?!?’ asked the pilot.
‘Because I’m a photographer for CNN, he responded, and I need to get some close up shots.’
The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, ‘So, what you’re telling me, is . . . You’re NOT my flight instructor ?!?
excellent videos...thanks for posting them.
If you don’t have a DVR get one. I record Red Eye every night. I don’t always agree with Greg but it is a good show.
