‘Humbled’ Brown arrives for swearing-in
Boston Herald ^ | 2/04/2010 | Jessica Van Sack

Posted on 02/04/2010 1:55:17 PM PST by goldstategop

A triumphant Scott Brown arrived to a rock star’s welcome outside the Russell Senate Office Building today to begin the whirlwind swearing-in process.

“Hold on. Let me get my certification papers,” said the U.S. Senator-elect as he pulled up in a Cadillac Escalade. He had to leave his trusty old GMC Canyon pickup at home for the flight to the Capitol.

“I’m happy to be here,” he told the press swarming around his vehicle. Brown then pulled his certification papers out of the back.

When asked what his top priority would be after being sworn in today at 5 p.m., he said, “obviously it’s jobs, jobs, jobs.”

As for why his swearing-in was pushed to today, Brown said he had not been in contact with Republican leadership. He did say he has spoken to U.S. Sen. John McCain a few tims.

“It’s exciting,” Brown, 50, added about the day’s historic events.

“I’m humbled and honored to represent the people of Massachusetts. Now it’s time to get to work,” he added.

Brown stopped to reflect on the late U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, whose seat he is filling.

“I have great respect for Sen. Kennedy. Everybody in Massachusetts did. . . . He had a great sense of humor.

“He always laughed about whether I had a better singing voice than my (“American Idol” contestant) daughter (Ayla),” he added before slipping into the Senate building to confer with his new Chief of Staff Steven P. Schrage.

Later, Brown told the Herald he knows the lights on all the cameras “will dim” and he’ll need to get work done.

Asked whether he would attend interim U.S. Sen. Paul Kirk’s speech on the Senate floor, Brown said, “I have to go see what they have planned for me. I’d certainly love to.”

He did not attend Kirk’s speech, which has now ended.

Brown said he must attend Senate orientation tomorrow and will move into Kirk’s old office by Monday.

Congratulations, Senator Brown. Here’s hoping you take good decisions for Massachusetts and the country, conduct yourself well personally and professionally, and don’t get corrupted by the swamp.

“I have to go see what they have planned for me”

Oh dear. Whipped already. Mr Senator’s being told what to do by more informed people.

Tying up republicans in busy work is a key democrat goal.

What is Kirk doing making a speech on the Senate floor? The new Senator has arrived. Kirk should exit gracefully. His term is OVER.

No, it was just a diplomatic way of saying “No!”

As a clever FReeper said yesterday, Kirk’s only remarks should have been two words:

“Kirk out”.

I heard that he flew coach to DC while many senators think they deserve taxpayer funded private jets.

I’d prefer “Beam me up, Scotty”. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see in James Trafficant (and the muskrat on his head) win a house seat first.

The man was lawfully appointed and did his job not according to our liking but without besmirching the law or morality. He’s at least earned the right to say goodbye on his own terms.

I’m not necessarily upset with Kirk. He is what he is. I’m upset again with the GOP leadership not raising a stink as to Kirk’s status.

Senate precedent indicates the man should not have been acting as a Senator no later than the 20th of January. He should not have been in any Roll Calls or Committee votes.
