I haven't seen that reported before. She has certainly been in some shady dealings. Of course, she could just be a well-intentioned but powerfully stupid business person. Or, there could be something more nefarious. But, I would be surprised if she was really engaged in international child trafficking. She just doesn't seem astute enough.
Time to get eyeball-to-eyeball with ‘ghetto south’. These half-wits need to remind themselves how well off they are before they start kicking ANYBODY under the bus.
That’s certainly possible. And shady or not, this could still be a shakedown attempt by the Haitian Government.
Perhaps they realized she wasn’t on the up and up, and arrested her in hopes they’d get a payout to keep it quiet. Then charged their minds, once they found out she had nothing but debt to offer.
Who knows...I just wanted to make sure you knew about the background.
Cat ladies inflict themselves on Haiti, bunch of nutters.
My brother, and a bunch of other people, spent more than 10 years helping Hatians set u a chicken/cows/pig/ crops farm.
One year after turning it over to the Hatians it was all gone.
The Hatians butchered all the seed stock animals for food.
Let'em starve.
The U. S. Embassy didn’t send anyone to the Court for the hearing.
You might want to hold your fire until you learn some facts.
Just sayin....
Read the article posted in #11
The U.S. should cut of ALL aid to Haiti until they are released.
From the article posted at #11, “The Idaho woman who led a group of 10 Baptists on a mission to help children in Haiti admits to failing to obtain paperwork needed to move 33 children to the Dominican Republic.”
Thanks for posting more information before folks might hop on the wrong bandwagon.
It's claimed that "some of the 33 youngsters had parents who were alive." Search for, Haiti children slavery.
Hundreds of thousands of children have parents still alive who gave/sold them (the children) away because the parents did not want the children or could not afford them.
So the claim that "some of the 33 youngsters had parents who were alive" may be true but so what? (If the children were former slaves.)
Thanks for posting more information before folks might hop on the wrong bandwagon.
Double post again. What’s with the lag?
Cut ‘em off NOW!!!!!
I don’t think the whole story is being told, but I’ll side with the Haiti government for now based on what is known i.e:
Group leader Laura Silsby acknowledged they may have lacked paperwork but... They admit they lacked paperwork so that’s asinine to begin with and that in itself is enough to hold them.
Officials say many of the children still have parents.. if that’s the case then they are not orphans and that is a huge problem.
You’re welcome! Usually the lag is a sign that FR is about to crash again :( The last few day’s I’ve seen the same behavior and then *poof*...down for two hours :(
Hope Jim, John & co. can find the problem soon.
She seems to be like the people who run Animal Rescues instead of having real jobs - they run around to all the actual animal shelters and buy "their" breed for $100 or so, then if you can jump through all their hoops, you can adopt that animal for $400, meanwhile they're asking for contributions from everyone in the world. It looks like Silsby is trying to do the same thing with CHILDREN, and thinking that in a crisis situation like Haiti, she could get away with it.
I got very suspicious of ALL international adoption agencies when Steve and I looked into the process a few years ago, and found that it would cost $30K to adopt an Eastern European child. The Washington Post had just done a series of exposes on EE orphanages, and the doctors were making $50 a month, the kids were eating meat once a week, etc. So where's the $30K going?
Trying to understand why I should be outraged when people who have no right to take these children out of the country attempt to do so.
There is great suspicion in the Third World as to why rich Westerners want their kids in the first place. Most don't have cultures encouraging adoption. They suspect we want the kids for domestic servitude or worse, which is closer to what they know. It's hard enough to get a Third World country to allow international adoption and doing something stupid like this can cause a whole country to close, making things worse for all the parents.
Bottom line is you have to respect the local process, no matter how flawed. Not that it didn't cross my mind to grab the kid and bolt, but you just can't do that and if you did you'd create a possibly invalid adoption for yourself.
