NEW YORK (CBS News) A "toxic" work environment created by bosses in the Federal Air Marshal Service is "crippling" the agency's efforts to keep skies safe, sources tell CBS News Chief Investigative Correspondent Armen Keteyian.
"We talked to well more than a dozen current and former air marshals around the country," Keteyian said to co-anchor Harry Smith Monday, "and, certainly in their mind, the service is riddled with internal problems. (From the) top down - supervisors, many of them white, male, ex-Secret Service agents, who have created a hostile atmosphere, work atmosphere, work environment inside many of the 21 field offices around the country. Intimidation, retaliation, discrimination against women, minorities, disabled, gays.
"And it's created a real atmosphere, a toxic atmosphere inside the agency that, in the belief of the people that we've talked to, has really crippled the agency from within."
The service is, says Keteyian, "attracting really quality candidates in a lot of ways. The problem is retaining them. Once they get into this atmosphere, once they get into these field offices, there are lawsuits, EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) complaints across the country. The real problem now is being able to keep the qualified candidates because, we're being told, there's a mass exodus of really good agents.
The problems don't stop there, Keteyian adds.
The chances of a marshal being on the same flight as a terrorist are slim.
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, there are about 27,000 domestic and international flights per day but, airline industry insiders estimate, only some 3,000 - 4,000 air marshals, who spend half their time in the air.

We need to round up the white guys, load them on cattle cars and ship them to special camps where they won’t cause so much trouble.
Yeah here we go with the new scapegoats on the block, “white males”.
“Toxic atmosphere”, “Hostile work environment” at times is little more than being expected to show up for work.
Not as far fetched as you might think!
He said that they complained about not being able to go undercover as much as they wanted, being forced to wear suits and ties and have a 'regulation' grooming standard: No facial hair until they were a certain GS level in rank, clean cut, military haircuts, etc. They complained that it was the stupidest thing they'd heard of and it took years for the superiors to realize that they might want their Air Marshals to look like ordinary passengers.
There were also hassles about carrying firearms in the various airports across the USA even though they were Federal agents. They'd sometimes even get identified openly by TSA morons in the manner of 'HEY JOE! THIS GUY IS ANOTHER AIR MARSHAL! YOU CAN LET HIM THROUGH!' in view of hundreds or thousands of commuting passengers. Also, the burnout rate for Air Marshals is huge: You'll never do anything but fly all over the map 10-18 hours a day. That's all that you ever get to do; there's nothign else in the career path. Meals are always airline box lunches and overpriced food in the airport food courts, and sometimes there's not even enough time between flights to make it to the bathroom.
I told that detective that I sure wasn't surprised.
"Do you think those rich, overlord white guys who are your boss have created a toxic work environment for you?"

That’s pretty much what I predicted when the program started up after 9/11 and I was a contractor at the FAA facility where they originally brought them in.
That’s really how the Federal government works. In this case it’s white guys, in other places it’s a fem-mob.
OK guys and gals, here is your intelligence question of the day:
You are on a plane being hijacked. Would you rather have an air marshall who is:
a. white male, or
b. disabled?
Disabled air marshals? Somehow, here in bizarro America, I believe it.
There are those in this country who would choose “b” without hesitation.
