Haitian orphans leave for Utah

Late Friday afternoon, ABC 4 confirmed that at least 50 children were on a flight headed to Miami, where they will be processed into the country by TSA officials.

The text posted at 8:48 a.m. Friday morning to the Utah Hospital Task Force blog said, "We have negotiated the release of 125 orphans bound for SLC and are on ramp in Haiti. Steve Studdert and Executive team along with full support from US Military and US Customs and ICE Agents made it happen. It is truly a miracle."

ABC 4 News has learned Stephen Studdert, the task force leader, went immediately into negotiations with both U.S. and Haitian officials on the fate of orphans from the Foyer de Sion Orphanage -- 70 of whom already have adoptive parents waiting for them in the United States.

Studdert lives in Alpine, Utah and is a former advisor to three U.S. presidents and has represented the U.S. in diplomatic assignments to over 100 countries. He also has extensive experience with the United Nations and serves as an advisor to the Under Secretary of the United Nations.

As a former mission president for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Studdert started the task force with a call to all former L.D.S. missionaries who served in Haiti to return in the aftermath of the earthquake to serve again, this time as volunteer interpreters. The task force was expanded to also include medical teams, construction workers and security personnel.

They'll all be reciting "When the Prophet speaks the thinking has been done" and singing "I hope they call me on a mission" by the end of the week.

Wow. Some people in Utah take in some orphans and all you two can think of is to disparage their faith or the kids’ color.

It seems odd there aren't more black Haitian children being adopted into African/American families.

White people seem to be in the majority when it comes to adopting these Haitian Orphans. Go figure?

I'm amazed. The poor little kids will grow up feeling guilty because the book of Mormon teaches they are not "white and delightsome" because of the sins of ancestors.

Look, I don't have a problem with White Folks adopting Black Children. But even with this clear example of White America stepping up to lovingly adopt Haitian orphans, we still can't shake being labeled racists by the likes of Sharpton, et al.

I’m not in favor of opening the border for Haitian refugees, as I think the admin is planning, but I think this is good and worthy.

Assuming they are not being pulled into the system, assuming they are getting released into families, this is a very good thing. My hat is off to the people who are behind this.
