Tampa, Florida -- Local leaders say President Barack Obama will put billions of dollars behind the plan for a high-speed rail link between Tampa and Orlando when he visits the Tampa Bay area Thursday.
In a relatively rare move, Vice President Biden will join the President in Tampa.
The two will be spending the night before the Tampa visit together as well, when President Obama delivers his first State of the Union Address on Wednesday.
The subject of President Obama's speech here is still officially a mystery, but leaders like Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Castor are confident they have it figured out.
The President's stimulus plan included billions of dollars to fund high speed rail projects; the money is planned to be spread out across the country and officially awarded sometime soon.
To get that job-creation money, Florida is competing with nearly a dozen other regions. Rep. Castor says it looks like "we won" the fight.
The first leg of Florida's system -- connecting Tampa and Orlando via Lakeland and Walt Disney World -- is expected to cost about $2.5 billion.
Castor says it seems to her the decision to bring such big names to Tampa is a good sign the federal government may be picking up that entire cost. .....
If you've stopped going to Disney World due to the cost - it looks like you're still going to be soaked.
Nice vote buying Obama.
Too Much Information:

Obama hugging Crist again. Get a room you two.
This concerns me...
I live in Tampa. This is going to be a huge boondoggle. Nobody wants it.They built a rail from YBOR City to the Cruise dock a few years ago. You see it go back and forth all day with nobody but the driver on it. Nobody will ride the train. It will be a ghost train. Castor is a fanatical liberal in a gerrymandered seat.
US federal taxpayers are gonna pay $2.5 Billion so people in Tampa can get to Disney World 30 minutes faster?
We are indeed a rich and generous people
sarc
obama and the people backing this should be laughed booed and egged off the stage- preferaby by those who lack jobs and health insurance
Go Rubio!
MONORAIL !
Another giant white elephant
Hope Rubio capitalizes on this!
Sounds like the trolly system they put in in Memphis, TN...few people ride the thing...tourist mostly, Memphians didn’t want it, king willie herenton (obamabutt kisser) shoved it down our throats anyway. BTW he’s running for US Rep steve cohen’s (obamabutt kisser) seat, cause steve is white and whitey can’t do a good job of taking care of black folks needs to paraphrase the ‘God’ anointed me former mayor of Memphis.
This will cause huge traffic jams on I-4. BOONDOGGLE!
“Hey Zero! You just lost Massachusetts! What now?”
“Me n’ Plugs are going to Disneyland!”
[cue theme...]
This is the opening salvo in the Dems 2010 “Buy The Vote With Stimulus Dollars” campaign.
I have seen two people on it once.
Well, light rail and trolleys are something that liberals like to push. So since healthcare is stumbling, Obama will introduce other liberal topics to excite the base.
I don’t even have to listen to the State of the Union speech. He will spell out liberal solutions to the problems we face. He may emphasize things like this transportation thing instead of healthcare. He may tell us that he feels our pain in this way or that way. Regarding the economy, he will push for some massive new spending of some kind. Government is the answer to the liberals. Porkulus wasn’t enough money, and obviously didn’t do anything to put a dent in unemployment. To the liberal, the obvious reason is that Porkulus wasn’t big enough to start with.
I didn’t know that Tampa was a big entry point for the “magic kingdom”. What is it, like 80 miles away? I always thought they had an airport in Orlando. I guess I was wrong.
Tampa TECO
What a boondoggle....
The trolley system costs 3 MILLION a year to operate, cost tens of millions to build, and brought in $540,000 in revenue last year, and requires a subsidy of over $5 PER PASSENGER!!!.
