I imagine the EOD guys are happy with their new toy. And much higher power, solid-state lasers are on the way so the burnthrough time will be greatly diminished.

a 20mm with incendiary rounds would do the job a lot cheaper.

I’d be curious to know if burying the ied stops the laser.

I dont think it will be used on too many bombs that are sitting still waiting to be cooked.

I presume then that the terrorists are going to have all their bombs laying around in plain sight. And in my opinion, it took too long to blow up a bomb. Good start though, now to improve it for a realistic use.

But, will it work on hemorrhoids?

The problem is that most of the IEDs are not so obviously placed. Finding the damn things among the rubble in the streets and along roadways and buried alongside roads or in vehicles is much more difficult than cooking them with a high-powered laser.

Get some! I agree the bombs are in plain sight. I’m sure this will progress. I bet they are having fun heating up MREs’ with it!

We were using similar equipment 19 years ago in Desert storm to knock out incoming rockets = how many of our troops lives could have been saved with some of these in country the past years?
In many areas, especially out in the worst remote fire bases, our soldiers haven't had much more to fight with than the Taliban.
It wasn't, for ex., until 2008 that the troops in the infamous Korengal Valley, our 173rd was taking the highest KIA’s - that they finally got an antiquated howitzer.
Now, our troops are shackled with the NRE - directly responsible for the highest monthly KIA’s since the first year.
Some wonder just who the CIC is more concerned about. You want to see what our troops have really been in the middle of? Watch for the movie "Restrepo" - by Sebastian Junger "Perfect Storm" and Tim Hetherington. This is not a movie with 'actors' - this is in the field with the Sky Soldiers of Battle Co - as it happens - http://www.restrepothemovie.com/
