Representative Tim Bishop (NY-01) holds a very small lead against potential Republican challenger Randy Altschuler, 47% to 45% in a new SurveyUSA poll sponsored by Firedoglake.
Bishops is one of the suburban districts that Democrats will struggle to hold in 2010, and securing them will be key to retaining a Democratic majority in Congress. Altschuler is a well-funded challenger with more than $776,000 in his campaign fund and the ability to self-finance. He has already started running campaign ads in the district.
Looking deeper into the numbers, Altshulers support might be slightly stronger than the poll numbers indicate. His support among Republicans is 66% to Bishops 23%, with 11% undecided. Those relatively weak numbers among Republicans could be due to the fact that he will likely face a primary challenge from George Demos. If he consolidates the Republican undecideds, his numbers would be much stronger against Bishop.
President Obamas very low approval numbers in the district (42% approve, 53% disapprove) could be a drag on Bishop. Bishop won in 2006 with 61% of the vote and in 2008 with 58% of the vote. The district has a PVI of +0, whereas Driehaus had a D+1 and Snyders was R+5. Recently the NY-01 had been rated lean Democrat by the Cook Political Report, whereas Snyder and Driehaus who both trail their GOP opponents by 15 points according to the Survey USA poll were listed as tossups.

He’s a gutless wimp!
Guess it’s time to shore up our Tea Party efforts again!!
Come on Randy Altschuler!\
Make it a CLEAN sweep!
Make Obama “surprised” and “frustrated”.
good news all around. A lot of rats are jumping ship.
2010 will be much better than 94.
we have special elections in Arizona and Hawaii I think, coming up.
If Firedoglake needs to jump in, Bishop must be in real trouble.
The woman is 100% commie and vindictive as hell.
Timmy will soon decide he needs to "spend more time with his family".
Woohoo, looks like we’re getting Long Island back!
Those vids from the town halls are bad enough to send Tim headlong into the abyss where he belongs.
Good to see a candidate against Bishop with money on hand. Lee Zeldin in 08 was broke from the beginning. He didn’t have money for TV or radio commericals. I was a volunteer for Zeldin and with 2 weeks left we ran out of money for lawn signs and couldn’t get more. The campaign HQ couldn’t afford enough phones for the phone banks on Election Day.
Now we need a strong candidate for NY-02 against Israel.
Usually, if the incumbent has less than 50% in a race like this, he is cooked. Good news.
Florida and Hawaii.
We don’t stand a chance in Wexler’s FL district (well, if the RATs ran someone really bad and we ran someone really good we’d have a chance, but they’ll nominate a locally popular state senator while we’ll nominate a nobody with no money and no chance).
In Abercrombie’s HI district, which gave President Bush 47% in 2004 but gave “local boy” Obama like 70% in 2008, I think we can pull off the upset, although a recent poll showed GOP candidate Charles Djou at like 15%, well behid the two RATs. HI has an all-party special election with no run-off, so if the two RATs pretty evenly split 65% of the vote Djou can win with 35%.
*ping*
I’m starting to wonder if the democrats CAN keep the house.
I wonder how other endangered House ‘Rats in New York are doing?
