2010 as 1994? Relax, Democrats (LA Times)
LA Times ^ | 1-17-10 | Nancy L. Cohen

Posted on 01/17/2010 10:26:34 AM PST by truthandlife

Two Democratic senators and one governor announced their retirements earlier this month, and days later, the smart money has Ted Kennedy's Massachusetts Senate seat falling to the GOP for the first time in nearly 60 years. Suddenly, the Republicans are crowing and Democrats are trembling -- everyone says the Democratic Party is doomed in 2010.

What is the source of this breathless hysteria? Memories of the 1994 Republican midterm landslide. But everyone should take a deep breath: The 2010 midterms will not be a repeat of 1994. Why? Because almost everything we think we know about the 1994 election is wrong.

Let's look at the 1994 election. How was the GOP able to pick up 52 House seats and eight Senate seats to take control of Congress for the first time in over four decades? This was the second year of Bill Clinton's presidency, and his signature initiative -- healthcare reform -- had just failed. Although economists insisted the recession was over, unemployment remained high and wages were stagnant.

According to received wisdom, the Contract with America -- the agenda the GOP ran on -- capitalized on widespread discontent with Clinton and the Democratic Party and articulated a conservative vision that resonated with Americans. Newt Gingrich, soon to be speaker of the House and the putative architect of the rout, boasted, "We have a clear mandate, and we intend to be revolutionaries." Never mind that only 39% of voters showed up for the supposed referendum on the state of the nation.

Denial works to advantage. Let them dream. On Nov 2 it will turn into their worst nightmare.

Liberals are right. Its not going to be 1994. Its going to be bigger than 1994. They are in denial.

The fact the The Zero hasn't taken the steps necessary to "free up the economy" (starting with a massive overhaul of our income tax system!) and to reign in the excesses of Wall Street will mean the Democrats will suffer gigantic losses on November 2, 2010.

Nancy Cohen, lecturer in the UCLA Department of History, penned a commentary appearing in today’s Los Angeles Times, where she compares the business scandals during the Theodore Roosevelt and George W. Bush presidencies (Home Edition, California, Pg. B11).

That is why I put LA Times in the title. These people are blind and stupid. I actually hope they keep it up.

Let them whistle past the graveyard. Libs can not win with lib votes alone. They must fool the inds into believing they aren’t libs. The inds aren’t buying that anymore.

Obama in 2010 is nowhere near as unpopular as Clinton was in 1994. Not even close.

Obama’s job approval is around 50% in most polls, his personal approval is even higher.

Republicans will have a good year, but it won’t be the banner year people are hoping for.

I don’t honestly think Brown will win in Mass either. He has done really well, and the Dem is pathetic, but that seat will stay in liberal hands.

The American public is far more open to socialist ideas these days. Socialized medicine is probably acceptable to over half of them.

Didnt Tom Foley lose his seat in 1994? Wasnt the house banking scandal going on at the time? That was childs play compared to what is currently going on between Congress, the WH and the Banksters.

I dont agree with her stats either.

Widespread discontent with Clinton would have continued had a Republican Congress not won in 94, and Democrats would have lost everything in 96. Clinton was a miserable failure until the Republican Congress came along to bail him out. Obamao is a miserable failure, and the gambit the Democrats are playing with healthcare will worsen his situation. The best the Democrats can hope for at this point is the short memory of the American people, because Obamao is the worst president in our history, and people are feeling the pain.

Nancy L. Cohen is a historian and the author of "The Reconstruction of American Liberalism, 1865-1914" and "The Social History of the United States: The 1990s."

Explains a lot.

This piece accurately captures the view of the bigoted anti-Christian Left. But, Comrade Cohen is missing a key factor in her analysis. Southern and Christian voters abandoned the Democrat Party because they finally recognized that the party they had supported all of their lives no longer represented their views. Bye bye Democrat party and these folks have not gone back.

I think that 2010 will be the year that Blue Collar America will realize that the Democrat Party no longer represents their views and will abandon them as happened in 1994 with Christians and Southerners. This will leave the Democrats with the rich, the uber liberals, Blacks, recent immigrants, and the hard core unions. These groups are what the Obama government is all about and everyone can see it.

“Obamao is the worst president in our history, and people are feeling the pain.”

Yet he still holds a 50% job approval rating in most polls, and a higher personal approval rating.

I think we have to accept that the electorate has changed quite a bit. Too many people pay no taxes so they really don’t care how much more money the government gobbles up. Additionally, our school systems and media have done their job of softening the public up for socialism.

Along with gays, most of the media establishment and dead people - lots and lots of dead people (whom still manage to cast ballots).

I disagree with you. This is still a "conservative" country. Yes there are certain people who enjoy the drug of entitlements but you have a Senate race in Massachusetts that Ted Kennedy used to have and it will be taken by a Republican. The Democrats didn't even have their "machine" in place in this state because they have never had to have it. There are good Republican candidates coming out of the woodwork to run in this election because they know it will be the best political climate in their lifetime. Democrats are retiring and will continue to retire. It will be an annihilation in 2010.

According to received wisdom, the Contract with America -- the agenda the GOP ran on -- capitalized on widespread discontent with Clinton and the Democratic Party and articulated a conservative vision that resonated with Americans.

This is true, but the author completely misses the mark with her "blame it on Christians" take on the 1994 election.

The Contract With America was really just an inoculation tool used to deflect the criticism that the GOP wasn't "for" anything (and instead was just running against Clinton). Having a simple, positive, 10-point agenda and publicizing it widely enough that voters knew it existed even if they didn't know or care about the details, allowed the GOP to more fully capitalize on the dissatisfaction with Clinton and the Dems.

Wrong. Or, more accurately, it remains to be seen.

But, Obama is more unpopular now than Clinton was in January 1994.

Clinton’s favorables in January 1994 were 55%.
Obama’s favorables are currently 51%.

This is according to Gallup.
