UCLA study says legalizing undocumented immigrants would help the economy

Based on surveys done after the 1986 amnesty program, it concludes that even during the recession, legalizing undocumented workers would benefit the economy. Not everyone agrees.

Even during the ongoing recession, immigration reform legislation that legalizes undocumented immigrants would boost the American economy, according to a new study out of UCLA.

The report said that legalization, along with a program that allows for future immigration based on the labor market, would create jobs, increase wages and generate more tax revenue. Comprehensive immigration reform would add an estimated $1.5 trillion to the U.S. gross domestic product over 10 years, according to the report.

"author, Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda, an associate professor with the UCLA Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies"

What if they opened up the colleges and universities to illegal alien professors? Definitely would be cheaper and probably better. Could be a budget saver for California.

That would be the conventional wisdom. But the author plainly says legalizing everybody “would create jobs, increase wages...”

That sounds like an unsupported nonsensical conclusion by a sociologist without any economic or mathematical training.

How exactly does increasing the labor force create jobs? How does increasing the supply of a good cause the price of that good to go up? The guy is nuts.

We are bringing in 1.2 million LEGAL immigrants a year and 125,000 legal foreign workers a month.

The latest data show 22.1 million immigrants holding jobs in the U.S. with an estimated 7 million being illegal aliens. By increasing the supply of labor between 1980 and 2000, immigration reduced the average annual earnings of native-born men by an estimated $1,700 or roughly 4 percent. Among natives without a high school education, who roughly correspond to the poorest tenth of the workforce, the estimated impact was even larger, reducing their wages by 7.4 percent. The reduction in earnings occurs regardless of whether the immigrants are legal or illegal, permanent or temporary. It is the presence of additional workers that reduces wages, not their legal status.

– 34 percent of immigrants lack health insurance, compared to 13 percent of natives. Immigrants and their U.S.-born children account for 71 percent of the increase in the uninsured since 1989. Our Emergency Rooms have been turned into free health care clinics for immigrants, legal and illegal, affecting the quality and timeliness of services and increasing medical costs subsidized by the insured and the taxpayers.

The proportion of immigrant-headed households using at least one major welfare program is 33 percent, compared to 19 percent for native households. The poverty rate for immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) is 17 percent, nearly 50 percent higher than the rate for natives and their children. Massive low-skill immigration works to counteract government anti-poverty efforts. While government works to reduce the number of poor persons, low-skill immigration pushes the poverty numbers up. In addition, low-skill immigration siphons off government anti-poverty funding and makes government efforts to shrink poverty less effective. Milton Friedman said, “You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state.”

In California, illegal aliens are already de facto “legalized”.

Without enforcement, there is no “crime”.

How’s that working out for you, California.

I used the exact same non-biased and realistic methodology as UCLA.

I will quote The Great One, Mark Levin, here:

“When you import poverty, you have more POVERTY!”

wanna use immigration to improve the economy? Go back to the old rules: marketable skills in short supply, who will be paid well, and are willing to become real Americans. Instead of Americans In Name Only.

They won’t suck our schools, hospitals, and our social programs dry; they will PAY taxes instead of suck up tax resources.

but that sounds mean...

When unemployment of American citizens is at record levels, we should be fiercely enforcing our immigration laws so that illegals are removed from the work force to make room for American citizens to fill those positions.

There are more than a few former corporate CEO's who would be more than willing to take jobs as janitors and trash collectors right now.

Watch for the dems to “reform” immigration as soon as the health care bill is passed, overwhelming the health care system to the point that all private insurers will be forced out of business.

One wonders why during this time of economic crisis and state budgetary meltdown in the State of California why the University of California has a Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies?

Based on surveys done after the 1986 amnesty program

You mean the amnesty to end all amnesties? The amnesty that was touted as ~1.5 million but ultimately ended up being many more? The amnesty that not only 'legalized' but also promised enforcement? The amnesty that lead to the now 12-30 million invaders we currently have? That amnesty?

The only good thing so far is Botox Nan has promised her members that once health care is forced on us, she will NOT force anymore “difficult” votes on her members. She is going to make the Senate lead the way.

She’s not stupid. She’s hoping to continue to remain as Speaker, so she keeps her power, even if Dems have only a one vote lead after the Nov. elections.

Anytime that a university releases a study, it should be disregarded. That includes lefty think tanks. I won’t even read the tripe. When I see a UNIV STUDY, I know that it’s BS and someone is getting the cash for their phoney comments.

UCLA study says legalizing undocumented immigrants would help the economy

They are NOT "undocumented immigrants." They are ILLEGAL ALIENS. Calling these people "undocumented immigrants" is like calling shoplifting an "undocumented purchase."

According to the LA Times article:
1. 40% of all workers in LA county(pop.10.2million)are working for cash and not paying taxes.
2. 95% of warrants formurder are for illegal aliens.
3. 75% of the most wanted list are for illegal aliens.
4. Over 2/3rds of all births in LA are to illegal on Medi-Cal and taxpayers are paying the bill.
5. 35% of all inmates in CA prisons are illegal aliens.
6. The FBI says 50% of gangbangers are illegal aliens.
7. 60% of all HUD properties are for illegal aliens.
8. 5.1 million speak English and 3.9 million speak Spanish.
9. Less than 2% of illegal aliens pick our crops.
10. 29% are on welfare
11. 29% of all Federal prisons are Illegal aliens.

When you add up all of the costs forest fires, mudslides, earthquakes, anchor babies and crime one can easily see that we should just walk away and let the illegal aliens have the entire state. Once they have ruined to the point that they cannot care for it anymore then it might be worth a look to see if we should return.Obama’s mess means we will not have the money to fix it for a long, long, long time.

The dems don't care what the public thinks about obamacare because they are going to legalize millions of new voters in time for the 2010 elections. You can bet these new voters will pull the lever for the D candidate.

It’s been a long time now since I’ve heard that slogan “here to do the jobs that Americans don’t want to do”. True to the commie pattern of telling any lie to get the foot in the door, and then going on to the next lies until no one believes them, but by that point they don’t care because they’ve accomplished their purpose.

7 million illegals holding jobs - which I would have to assume to be “Non-engineering” to say the least.

And what about the the remaning 35 million illegals? If they are not working - they must be
1) Feeding the so-called underground economy
2) SUcking up welfare

both are bad for the Nation.
