This is what happens when the Democrats are trusted. New video from Steven Crowder at PJTV. Crowder visits some of the worst sections of Detroit in this video and the basic question -- as always -- is how did Democrats who have been in almost total control of for almost 50 years bring the city to its knees. Before the video, a quick story from Jim Geraghty at the Campaign Spot about the Michigan lieutenant governor dropping out of this year’s race for governor. Description from PJTV…

Well, to be fair, Democrats have been in charge of other cities for at least that long that are nowhere near as bad as Detroit.

Detroit by far had the most violent of the 1960's race riots and it triggered a torrent of white flight to the suburbs. Also, dispersal and decline of the auto industry has hurt them.

It's the worst urban decay I've seen anywhere not in a war zone. Abandoned factories, abandoned houses everywhere, even abandoned blocks. Sad.

I do agree, though, that liberal Democrat policies never had a chance of reviving Detroit or bringing the middle class back. Just the usual crap, keep taxes and regulation high and throw money at government programs. No way that was going to solve the problems.

Because communism/socialism/liberalism is as expensive as it is demoralizing.
Just compare Detroit with many former east bloc cities.
Centralized government can't make things happen, it can only regulate and prevent.
It kills initiative and innovation.
It's like driving with the brakes on, your car use more fuel, yet it goes slower and slower and eventually breaks down.

Democrats run cities the way third world dictators run countries. They hoard all the money, smear and/or destroy their opposition, and make people completely dependent.

The big city government machine in the White House wants to go national.

With some 4 million foreclosures expected later this year (RealtyTrac), things will become far more interesting than the focus on Detroit.

$130,000 a year for a union auto job... WTF

Why should a high school dropout make more than $15,000 a year!?!?!

Unions and Liberals are destroying our country!

Can someone tell me why Detroit wasn’t hung around Obama’s neck during the campaign?

Mayor Dave Bing is a true democrat but he doesn’t appear to be any friend of the unions. He himself is a Detroit businessman and understands how damaging the unions can be. Back when he was in the NBA the money wasn’t like it is today so his money came from hard work.

There are at least 3 seperate lawsuits against him now that were brought by various unions. One of the first things he did was fire some 50 busdrivers who decided to call an informal strike. Refusing to deduct union dues from some city workers paychecks has brought another lawsuit.

Personally I think he’s on to something with refusing to deduct union dues. The union is afraid they won’t be able to collect dues if they aren’t forcibly taken from paychecks.

It’s terribly unfashionable even to mention such things, but race has a lot to do with it. With both a black population and black “leadership” (and obviously the two are related), decay and barbarity ensue.

I have heard good things about Dave Bing. I assume he’s similar to our mayor, who is also a business-friendly Democrat. The guy sure has his work cut out, though. Detroit is a disaster. So many years of bad government and corruption.

Obama could learn more than a few lessons from Dave Bing.

Business (from Wiki)

Aged 22 with an NBA contract worth $15,000, Bing was rebuffed by the National Bank of Detroit on getting a mortgage to finance a home. This led Bing to work at the bank during the offseason, holding jobs in the teller, customer relations and mortgage departments.

Immediately after retiring, he worked at a warehouse of the steel processing company Paragon Steel and was paid $35,000. He left after two years, after stints in the company's shipping and sales operations.

In 1980, Bing opened Bing Steel with four employees in a rented warehouse from $250,000 in loans and $80,000 of his own money. Losing all his money in six months, the company shied away from manufacturing to focus on being a middleman. With General Motors as their first major client, the company turned a profit in its second year on revenues of $4.2 million. By 1984, Bing was awarded by President Ronald Reagan the National Minority Small Business Person Of The Year. By 1985, Bing Steel had expanded to two plants with 63 employees posting revenues of $40 million[5].

Bing Steel would transform itself to the Bing Group[6], a conglomerate with headquarters located in Detroit's North End. The company, among other things, supplies metal stampings to the automobile industry.

At the 1990 NBA All-Star Game, Bing received the Schick Achievement Award for his work after his NBA career.

I grew up witnessing a similar situation with some of my high school
classmates.
A fair number of them could have done well in college and become
doctors, dentists, lawyers, research scientists, etc.

But the blessed assurance of a good union job in the local oil company
couldn’t be passed up.

Besides the general corruption of too many unions, the waste of human
potential is just awful.

I’ve mentioned this is a previous thread, but Detroit is one of the worst places imaginable when it comes to trying to do business. The company I worked for some years back had branch offices in both Chicago and Detroit. Lemme tell ya, folks: for all the talk about “Chicago-style politics”, Chi-town has *nothing* on the Motor City when it comes to red tape, bureaucratic incompetence, and political corruption.

However, some lawyers and research scientist positions are just as shameful as being in the UAW.
