N.J. Assembly committee approves bill allowing undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition

A bill that would allow illegal immigrants who are New Jersey residents to pay in-state tuition was today moved out of an Assembly committee after hours of emotional testimony.  Opponents of the bill say it goes against federal law and would deprive state colleges of the money that out-of-state tuition would bring in, but supporters counter that it would bring paying students to the school who otherwise would not have attended at all.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee voted 7-4 to move the bill to the full Assembly. It was scheduled for debate in a Senate committee today.  If the bill is passed by the full Legislature and signed by the governor, immigrants in the country illegally would be eligible for in-state tuition if they have attended a New Jersey high school for at least three years and received a diploma or equivalency.

The Office of Legislative Services, a nonpartisan body that works for the legislature, said the bill would not cost the state money, but some legislators say they cannot see how that is possible. Assemblyman Richard Merkt (R-Morris) said it was "naive" to think so, and Assemblyman Herb Conaway (D-Burlington) said he had spoken to university presidents who said it would have a fiscal impact.

New Jersey is dead broke and the Democrats want to hand a freebie to illegals. Go figure.

This will attract millions more illegal immigrants to NJ, thus taking up all kinds of additional jobs and services.

That is the real purpose of the bill. The recession has caused a lot of illegals (democrat voters) to leave and they want them back.

The democrats are very very evil people. Especially in NJ.

“...said the bill would not cost the state money”

Free money! No impact, except on the wallets of the NJ taxpayer. Scumbags.

A group of legal immigrants, who had graduated from WA state high schools and were here on student visas, sued the University of WA in 2002 (I think that was the year) over a similar law. They won repayment of out of state tuition for the period that they were in school.

I have looked for mention of this court case on-line when other states took the same action and it seems to have been buried, but I know one of the students who participated in the case, a young man from Korea. He was forced to leave the country almost immediately after graduating and has been trying to get back ever since. He even tried enlisting in the US military and they wouldn’t take him.

Illegal aliens will get a benefit that is denied to full citizens in 49 states. My older son, a Delaware resident, is considering a New Jersey college. If he goes there we will pay double what illegal aliens pay. In other words, he ain’t going there.

These people are NOT "undocumented immigrants." they are ILLEGAL ALIENS. Calling them "undocumented immigrants" is like calling shoplifting an "undocumented purchase."

I forgot to put this question in my post, didn’t AR Gov. Mike Hickabee support a scholarship program for illegal aliens?

New Jersey is dead broke and the Democrats want to hand a freebie to illegals. Go figure.

The reason they are supporting in-state tuition rates for illegals is to ingratiate themselves with these future voters. It is happening in every state and it is part of a corrupt democrat plan.

To understand how the democrats plan to make all illegals in the US into registered voters, Google the trerm "Universal Registration" and examine the lists that will be used to enroll new voters, including names repeated on multiple lists so ACORN will be able to vote the same name over and over without showing IDs. The voting corruption the democrats have planned for the US is astronomical and if they pull it off they can stay in power forever.

Talk about a conspiracy! You have been warned.

i guess that since they already pay billions in state aid to cities that educate illegals in the elementary and high schools, they may as well extend it for college knowing that not many will go... most illegals drop out.. many who come are both illiterate in their native language and in English.

how true, life isn't fair...We already spend billions in aid to school districts with illegal aliens, hospitals who treat illegal aliens for free and prisons who incarcerate illegal aliens, so I guess it's a feather in the cap of the democrat who knows that most illegals drop out of high school (some are illiterate in their own language) and won't be going to college and when it comes time for reelection, the democrats could uses this in their ads as a bonus for them and label the republican as anti-immigrant.
