Detroit’s Socialist Nightmare Is America’s Future
Whiskey and Gunpowder ^ | 11/2/09 | Porter Stansberry

One of the most important things to remember about socialism – or coercion of any kind – is it fails eventually because human beings have an innate desire for liberty and a strong need for personal property rights. In fact, the origins of government lie in the need of agricultural communities to protect themselves from violence and theft. So it is particularly ironic that in more recent times, it is government itself that has more frequently played the role of bandit. When you start taxing people at extreme rates to pay for socialist “benefits,” when you start telling them which schools their children must attend, when you start giving jobs away to people based on race instead of ability… you quash human freedom, which bogs down productivity… and if continued for long enough, leads to social collapse.

It amazes me how little the politicians are aware of the angry mood of the voters. I think Americans will not take much more rejection by their representatives. Politicians at all levels, but especially nationally, are refusing to heed the views of those who elect them. Lord only knows where it leads....

The thing is, they NEVER learn.

Doesn’t matter how much evidence, history, or results are placed right in front of their beady eyeballs.

They plow ahead with their half-baked ideas, unconstricted by facts.

Michigan is now effectively a socialist state on the Euro model. Michigan is no longer free and no longer really American.

California is not far behind. The people of California have lost their voice and ability to control their lives. California too is on the cusp of socialist control. Unlike Michigan that is under union governance there is no similar all pervasive socialist engine. There are however coalitions of leftists who can act together to transform from American to Euro.

Socialism fails, because eventually the majority figures out it can do nothing and live off the hard work of the few.

Eventually the few are too few, and the system collapses.

The equal protection clause of the 14th amendment should of been applied to tax rates, that way everyone has skin in the game, and everyone thus has the motivation to keep government spending down.

In my opinion the progressive tax rate structure is unconstitutional.

That's because one of the main requirements to be a liberal or leftist "leader" is hubris. You have to believe that the disastrous policies aren't the problem: Just the people who tried to implement those policies. And of course, THAT person is just the right one who will finally make it all work.

Michigan has a long tradition as the bellweather state. We start our economic slide first, slide further, and it lasts the longest.

However it looks like the political winds are shifting and the GOP is likely to pick up the governors seat and a seat or two in the house.

Detroit mayor Dave Bing is a true democrat but he is doing some good things like refusing to collect union dues for city workers unions.

Wow. That is first rate.

Every single mayor of Detroit since 1961 has been a Democrat. Every single mayor of Detroit since 1974 has been black. Detroit has been a major recipient of every major social program since the early 1960s and has received hundreds of billions of dollars in government grants, loans, and programs. We now have a black, Democrat president, who is promising to do to America as a whole what his political mentors have done to Detroit.

... there is no way to argue that what the government has done to Detroit is anything but a horrendous crime. You may think what I’ve written above is merely a political analysis. Perhaps so, but politicians drive macroeconomic policy. And macroeconomic policy determines key financial metrics, like the trade-weighted value of a currency and key interest rates.

The likelihood America will become a giant Detroit is growing – rapidly. Politicians now control the banking sector, most of the manufacturing sector (including autos), a large amount of media, and are threatening to take over health care and the production of electricity (via cap and trade rules). These are the biggest threats to wealth in the history of our country. And these threats are causing the world’s most accomplished and wealthy investors to actively short sell the United States – something that is unprecedented in my experience.

I think you are mistaken, politicians are well aware of voter discontent. They all do internal polling and their office track all constitute communication. No way they do not know a vast portion of American is very angry or at minimally very concerned about our future

That leads me to believe either two things: The fix is in (ACORN, Union thuggery, outright voter suppression) or they are willing to sacrifice enough of their majority to go full stream ahead socialist

I believe it's the former.

Must read. Excellent piece, and the story isn’t just in Detroit. Much the same happened in smaller cities along the eastern seaboard at the same time. White flight, it was called.
And it’s still in progress.
But the government is, far as I’m concerned, only the weapon, not the cause of the problem. Governments don’t loot; people loot. People stupidly voted for the looting “leaders” and keep doing so. The country moves further left with each graduating class.
And before 0bama’s done — within three years — we will see illegal aliens and felons voting for more looting.
(Oh, but — molon labe! Get real. They starting coming and getting your rights a long time ago. They don’t even NEED to come to you, they send you bills in the mail. You meekly pay them. Don’t you.)
