As he took the oath of office before a record two million people, his approval rating over 70 per cent, Barack Obama believed he had been called on by history to remake America.
He had already spoken of a new “grand bargain” with the American people. The country, he was soon to profess, was on the crest of an historic wave – one that he would help "guide".
His aides believed Mr Obama was about to join the handful of truly transformative US presidents, such as Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, men compelled to achieve momentous change because of the crises they inherited.
Nearly one year on, Mr Obama, according to one poll last week, has an approval rating of 47 per cent – the lowest for any president at this point in his first term.

Obama is a disaster and there will be a huge backlash to the educated idiot. It already has started not even a year into his so called presidency.
The body American is rejecting Obama like a bad organ transplant. The MSM as anti-rejection drug is failing.
Most people aren't on Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security. Most people aren't on welfare or WIC. Still: try getting rid of any of those programs.
I have a friend whose child went onto Medicaid & Social Security disability (I think those are the right ones - whichever ones are for disabled adults) the day she turned 18. The girl is disabled, no doubt. But my friend talks endlessly about how she hates the idea of "government health care" and doesn't see the irony.
Give it a year or two, and no one else will, either.
It is like a badge of courage in these parts to “get your disability” and be dependent on the govt forever - people act as if they’d won a Purple Heart. Then they gang up and live in households that combine welfare checks, creating a monthly income that would probably easily eclipse mine...but then I work for a living. They are laughing at me all day long, or whenever they roll out of bed.
While you and your left wing buddies may not care, the American people DO care:
